The blather about "first computer programmer!" particularly grates on me because it ignores the genuinely impressive thing about her work and replaces it with something that is both relatively trivial and completely untrue.

She was rather weird, though, describing herself as superhuman and opining that it was a good thing for the world that she didn't have any ambition to gain temporal power. She also referred to herself as a fairy. Perhaps she really believed she was a fairy, supernatural and superhuman. Or maybe it was just that she wrote silly things when she was drugged up. She used opium and alcohol pretty heavily, apparently.

Bah, cut off by the fake character count again.

Wrong name of the machine.

Wrong name of the woman who talked with Babbage about the machine and the general topic of programmable computers after he'd invented it ('Lovelace' was part of her title, not her name).

Wrong about the first person to write a computer program - that was of course Babbage. The program (more accurately, algorithm for a program) on which the incorrect claim is based was written by Ada, Countess of Lovelace but it wasn't the first one written. It wasn't even the first one written by her. It wasn't even the first version of that particular program (Babbage wrote the first version).

There's a lot of things people get wrong about the subject, but that video is so bad that I hope it's meant as a joke.

Are you any chance referring to this video?

The description is wrong

The uploader has labelled it an analytical engine, but that's wrong. The video itself, which the uploader didn't make and apparently didn't watch, correctly states that it's a difference engine (at ~2:40). Also look at ~3:35, when one of the presenters is talking about a small experimental piece of a part of the analytical engine, which is the only piece ever constructed. As I said before, "Only a small part of the CPU was built (by one of his sons, much later)."

or was it this video:

Very wrong indeed

in the first 20 seconds the narrator gives the wrong name for the machine and the wrong name for the woman who worked

@ Angilion ~ For something that has "never been built" there sure were a lot of them built.

Just google "Babbage's Analytical Engine" and you can even see videos of one in operation.

No, you can't. There might be some mislabelled videos around, but that's not the same thing.

Babbage's difference engine has been built a number of times in recent years, but his analytical engine has never been built. His difference engine is a calculator. His analytical engine is a computer. Different thing entirely. If you read up on it a bit, you'd never mistake the two. The difference engine was the size of a chest of drawers and could be powered by hand. The analytical engine was the size of a large room and required a steam engine.

The computers in this room are not the machines - it's the people using the machines. That was the general title given to folks employed to perform all sorts of calculations. The term wasn't generally applied to computing machines until a few decades later.

if you want bigger, liabach, Babbage's Analytical Engine would fit the bill. Room-sized and weighing over 70 tonnes. It's never been built, though. Only a small part of the CPU was built (by one of his sons, much later).

A computer in the 1840s would have changed a lot of things, but while he was a brilliant scientist and inventor he was a lousy businessman and politician so he never got it built.

These things are calculators. An actual computer 80 years earlier would have changed a lot of things.

Back then you didn't need an expensive air-conditioning system to cool down your computer room. You just stuck a few fans up on some shelves.
