Makes sense to me. Brave man.

Of course, I was a bit distracted by the bored black-haired chick at 4:40. Jesus, I bet she's a screamer.

As for this guy, I don't blame him. He's proved himself before he took this decision and whatever his reasons he came to them after serving on the frontlines, not after spending his life sat on his arse being an armchair general. I think he's more than earned the right to say his piece.

"Any one who has served will tell you they don't fight for country or ideas, but for the man next to him."

True, you fight hard as you can because you know how hard your mates will be too and you don't want to be the one that let's it all go to poo....the weak link. But your mates aren't what you join up for in the first place...that in my case was half queen and country, and half to feel closer to my grandfather who'd just died. I wanted to have something other than genes and a bad hair style in common with him.

Good speach indeed. However, having been born the same year, I reached to the conclusion that patriotism is absolutely vile some time earlier, around 1990

@piperfawn Once the reasons for the war had been discredited. You then had a situation where all semblance of government had already been destroyed. I'm not saying they are or are not better off now then they were before. But leaving after going in and destroying all authority and governmental institutions would have created bigger problems then what has happened now.

Because once you removed the 'Iron fisted' rulers which were keeping factions in check it's a free for all. Just look at Syria and the rebels. The rebels are different factions which are fighting each other aswell as Assad. Or in Libya where the different militias are ruling each area as Fiefdoms. So I may agree with you Iraq Afghanistan should not have happened on balance just let the middle east continue fighting with each other and watch from the sidelines.

Everyone who's been in war hates war

Having been there, done that I couldn't agree more.

Hate the politicians that start these wars and send people off to fight them. But don't blame the soldier that simply does his job.

@McG
I think it's safe to say pretty much everyone here on I-A-B knows he will ignore any good in a situation so he can put out his hate.

Fighting for Queen & Country means fighting for your home, homeland. Fighting for your family you fecking coward.

But fine, don't fight for Queen & Country. Just lay down and let the muslims kill you and your family, your queen and country. I promise they will not have an attack of conscience about shooting you and your wife. They will have no problem blowing up your child's school.

Everyone who's been in war hates war. That does not mean you lay down defenseless.

"The selection board are now looking at each other to see who let this bloke in. The SAS is a family not best pleased by those who open their mouths in public."

It's not like it's a one off... an ex member either speaking in public or writing a book. The shelves are full of them and the documentary channels are full of tales of their deeds told by people who are still seemingly well respected by their fellow comrades when they all get together.

War will never be rainbows and sunshine. It is man killing man sometimes brutally. If people think other wise they are so ignorant I fear for our future.

@madduck You know who would appreciate the fact that the Allies won the great war? Poland, the Annexations and secret cultural genocide of the Polish by Austrian German and Russian Empires. Poland became a country again after 1918. Also Finland, Finland was either under the control of Russia or Sweden once again got their independence as the Allies commanded it. I can go on.

Yes there was a needless loss of life, and it lead to a lot of anti war sentiment. That sentiment became a policy, a policy called appeasement. It's subjective but if Hitler had been stopped before Poland, like when Czech industry and fortifications were handed over etc A greater war could have been averted.

Isolationism can be dangerous if you stay quite as those around you are being attacked then one day they'll come for you and no one can be there to help you. It's pooty but it's a fact.

Just because other factors mix things up doesn't mean their are never noble intentions to protect p

Makes some good points but also makes some stupid ones. And you can understand why he hates war having been in it.

In Britian we've been lucky, we were not conquered we were not under the heal of a foreign power. At the end of WW2 we didn't become a 'buffer zone' the oppression is something we read about in history books a long long time ago.

There is no supreme power across the world. Not intervening in the Rwandan genocide, gave an affect on the world and then they succeeded in Sierra Leone and Kosovo. Those countries would not be complaining about western intervention. But countries cannot intervene in every country, so other factors come into play. Yes war is politicized, yes people are too quick to go. But sometimes their is no alternative. As for Iraq after foolishly destroying the government and infrastructure the choice was to leave and it become another Somalia? Or keep it and try and leave some semblance of control and order?

Nice to hear. I am getting sick of the sentimental glorification of war, and of soldiers. It hides the brutality and nastiness of war, it glorifies war itself as a noble cause- i was asked today on FB show my respect for the start of the Great War.. REALLY??? no- let us at least see it for what it is...
