You do know that Gates has had basically zero to do with Microsoft operations since 2006 right?

Yeah? Well, whose fault is that? He's still the largest stockholder in the company. Don't tell me he couldn't call up Steve Balmer and tell him to stop selling crap.

So I guess Gates gets the top mainly from getting 18.88% in China. Heh 18%? That's about the same percentage of people who own non-pirated software in China.

Oh and WTH Nigeria? Obama getting a 23% just for being 1/2 black or something? The work Gates is doing in Nigeria is one of the reasons everyone else in the world ranked him so high. But the people he helps just voted based on color, so racist.

The industrial revolution in the UK accomplished many things in the same way as Bill Gates has done in his time.
By making shoddy goods and selling them at over-inflated prices where there was no viable alternative, industrialists made a fortune. They built grand luxury houses and provided lots of employment for lots of people.
In their twilight years they had so much money, they did not know what to do with it; the suggestion was that they gave something back to society. This 'philanthropy' gave rise to parks and gardens, housing and hospitals etc throughout the industrial north, with a lot of it still extant.
However, giving lots of dosh to charitable causes does not mean that your company's product was any good, it merely ensured that you got a prime spot in the local graveyard when your time was up.
Heaven will packed solid with the likes of BG, glad I'm an atheist.
The mortals back on Earth will endure the legacy of MS for many years to come.

"MS used to put out patches, bug fixes, and service packs. Now they just want to sell you a new version with more bugs than a Detroit housing project. That rotten bastard Bill Gates can burn in hell, for all I care. "

He has spent his time and money since trying to help people and cure diseases. So damning him for software that came out 4 years after he quit working there is kinda dumb / expected from you I guess.

I think this people are confusing the words fame, envy and admiration.

For example, Obama is famous but hasn't done anything of note to be admired. Attenborough is amazing in my books (as a biologist and friends of many... many are in the field solely because of him!) and has a career that many ENVY but again, hasn't done much to warrant actual admiration.

The problem is, admiration has to be done on a large scale to make the list. Angelina Jolie for instance has just adopted poor kids, which if you like kids is nothing to really be admired for, she just has the money to do it.

Many can be admired for starting from nothing and becoming rich but so can a lot of people. I personally admire the King of Thailand. HE is a man for the people and virtually every home you go to, every business,,, will have a picture of him because he is genuinely LOVED by the people.

I'd admire him a whole lot more if he fix all the goddamned bugs in his overpriced half-baked crapware. After 4 f***ing YEARS, you STILL can't select multiple drawing objects in Word 2010 by dragging a box over them; you have to hold the shift key and click on them one-by-one. This is a HUGE pain in the ass for me. Also, in many cases, you can't select more than one picture at a time in order to group them.

MS used to put out patches, bug fixes, and service packs. Now they just want to sell you a new version with more bugs than a Detroit housing project. That rotten bastard Bill Gates can burn in hell, for all I care.

Drawman - I know Russia very intimately. I am fluent in Russian, I have studied it for years, I doubled Majored in Russian.

Your analysis of the situation is so simple-minded. He stopped US from bombing Chem weapons facilities, big deal. But the current situation here in reality is that Russia is actually intervening by itself. I don't know if you're aware of that, Russia is actually there and they are actively facilitating the "storming" of Syria by Syrians.

Syria has been Russia's closest Mideast ally since the 1970s, Putin is clinging to the past. They need to cling to their last few remaining shiite partners, seeing as the sunnis are at war with Russia. And they will win if Putin stays in power.

"Yet funny how he was key in stopping the US storming into Syria."

That'd be a good argument if he had actually done it for humanitarian reasons and not to suit his own agenda.

@Andrew155: It's just a popularity survey, not particularly accurate. And not a question of morality, eh?

I found it amazing. Just look at that 'Top 30' list! Michael Jordan? Woah!

And the various countries are very interesting!

I don't want to point out the obvious, but I will. Picking people from 13 countries and saying it's the "world's opinion" is kind of lame. I would also like to know the 14,000 were proportional to their countries' populations.

The dumbest is Vladimir Putin. He's essentially destroying Russia, no exaggeration. It's now a country just a year or two away from truly being in an irreversible position. They won't keep the Far East, economically or politically. Terrorism will increase. Slavic minority. Poverty and corruption. And they love him for it.
