Wow. College athletes can't read. This is like, I don't know, like, old news re: 1960, or something?

No shiite, beternal. I don't know how anyone with international knowledge could think sports are an "American thing".

Well seeing is that would be tantamount to theft I'd say bad idea.

Maybe these athletes that are 'helped' to gain their qualifications should be made to pay some of their mega salaries back into the school system. Or is that too much to ask?

University of Alabama football program brought in ~$130.5 million in 2013, with $19.4 million of that being profit.

Every home game has an economic impact on Tuscaloosa of about $25 million.

So, the football program is not costing the University anything. It is, in fact, a money maker for the University.

The only problem with that is that the popular college sports (Football, baseball, soccer, basketball) programs prop up the school AND the less popular sports (gymnastics, volleyball, etc).

Not if they do none of those which they should it has nothing to do with college.

These programs earn a PROFIT for the university. Without which that huge student loan debt would be even more huge, as tuition would be more.

That's what they say so they can keep raking in money. It's pretty obvious the amount the big ones make from this should mean tuitions should be much lower they're not.

I think there's a lot broken with the current system but I can't lay all the blame on the colleges and universities. We are talking about people that are 18 and older here. If they're so far behind the curve by the time they are of college age that's no fault of the college. These kids have been given a pass long before then by their high school and that also means grades 1-8 have let it slip too along with the biggest travesty..their parent(s).

To say college's have no business in sports is retarded. Letting kids slip through the cracks of the education system no matter who they are is.

Your college- is that equivalent to a uni, or to a 6th form- or a technical college. Can't see how you could have illiterates in either but American education is rather odd..

Most democrats think like third graders.

Botfly, that was an unkind thing to say about third graders.

I'm with you, McG. College sports should be eliminated. Let the NFL and the NBA run their own farm systems just like MLB, and let the athletes get paid. Then if they want an education, they can go to school in the off season and pay their own damned tuition.

Colleges have no business being involved with sports. One's to educate and the other are games separate them and give people scholarships for what they should be there for.

drawman, they are treated like mentally slow students. Easy lessons that are read to them. Whatever to make sure they pass so they can play and make millions for the school.

If I had no brain in ma head but could kick a ball good and earn money doing it then I'd still earn more than all of you put together.
Sadly, I cannot kick a ball to save my life, and being an engineer earn only a tiny fraction of life's entertainers.

That said, Gerry, what do they do at these colleges then? Surely there are lessons and exams. I genuinely don't know how your college system works.

Any thoughts on this? This situation has bothered me for a long time. Bothered me a lot. But I'm not sure how it should be addressed. I really have the sense that these university athletic departments have gotten out of control, especially after what happened at Penn State.

Despite me loathing with a passion America's preoccupation with rewarding people that can kick a piece of leather more than those that actually contribute to society (teachers, scientists etc), I'm pretty sure this isn't just America and England's football teams are a prime example - just watch the interviews!

Salaries Washington State

So despite how this might sound like America bashing, I'm saying it's probably not just the US!

"The only place they can succeed is on the football field" and that's the only reason they are there. They didn't have the intellect to get into school, just fast and strong. That's what they are paid to do.

Link: Some College Athletes Read Like 5th Graders [Rate Link] - 10-18% of US college athletes in "revenue" sports read at an elementary school level. Some are outright illiterate.
