Insurance still takes estate money if you die owing money.

Did you think that through? The purpose of insurance is to cover or limit any expenses you might incur. If I have to have surgery, my BCBS will cover pretty much all of it. After I die they will not try to recover what they have paid out for that surgery. On the other hand if I have Obamacare/medicaid, the cost of that surgery will be taken from my estate. Like I said before (and is the point of the article), most people signing up for the Obamacare/medicaid option are unaware of this as it is not clearly explained.

"they could have kept their insurance"

Insurance still takes estate money if you die owing money. Really, truly don't see your point here.

This isn't news nor does it have anything to do with Obamacare.

Well, they're coming for your pensions, so why not your house, too?

Medicare and Medicaid have used estate recovery for decades. This isn't news nor does it have anything to do with Obamacare. Those programs have always been like that.

What you say only applies to those who would rely on medicaid because they have no means to provide for their healthcare. Medicaid is now being forced upon people via Obamacare, and the medicaid provisions are not readily apparent to most.

Obomba Care sucks, but let's just blame real things on it, not make stuff up.

It's not made up, and does not apply to just Washington. Whether it's intended or not, this is a consequence to anyone who accepts medicaid as part of Obamacare. Many people over 55 have lost their existing health insurance and are now forced to sign up for health insurance using medicaid. Once they sign up for the medicaid backed insurance they risk the forfeiture of their assets. This would not have been the case if as the president promised, they could have kept their insurance.

getting the government further involved in health care/health insurance is just a bad idea all around, no matter what your politics are. remember, we're talking about people who spend $500 for things like hammers and toilet seats.

eliminate the waste of money and resources.
eliminate the rampant fraud.
two excellent beginnings.

Now that the ACA has eliminated the lifetime benefits limits, the likelihood of people losing their houses is MUCH less than before the ACA.

This is not "Obomba Care". Washington elected to administrate their own care. Washington state came up with that idea.

Obomba Care sucks, but let's just blame real things on it, not make stuff up.

Exactly, flying_itj. Both my parents were in the hospital when they died. My mom was in the hospital or in respiratory rehab for over a year, then my dad ended up in the ER. Medicare plus their supplemental coverage covered it all so when they died they owed nothing. I was executrix when my dad died and I had to make sure all his other debts were paid, which was just a small balance on a credit card. But if he HAD owned for his medical expenses it would have been no surprise for me that it would come out of the estate. Now that the ACA has eliminated the lifetime benefits limits, the likelihood of people losing their houses is MUCH less than before the ACA.

If you owe money to any big organization they can charge your estate after death.

Have you lived under a rock your whole life and never found this out, or have you lived so privileged that you never had someone close die who owed money?

Credit card companies, banks, etc etc... all charge your estate after your death. Not news.
