Then he surrenders and the cops send the dog in to rip his throat out.

If he was surrendering he'd be doing what he was told which he wasn't. If you were a cop you'd assume then he's going to try something because that's what happens pretty much every time when a person doesn't cooperate after a high speed chase.

I don't feel bad for him at all. He lead the police on a high speed chase endangering everyone minding their own business on that road and then refused to leave his car when surrounded. If you're going be dumb you better be tough. Good doggy!

The idea that deadly force or extreme force should be used on anyone who is not an active threat is ridiculous. Police shouldn't be about vengeance. That's all this is. They were pissed because he ran. That should not be acceptable. But, of course, as they're the police, it's all okay.

How horrible. For both the dog and the man... there must have been a better and more efficient way to do this.

If you break the law and then make the cops chase you and then resist arrest, don't be surprised if the police use something a little more forceful than asking you politely to stop.

@agent smith - The parallel you draw that if citizens aren't allowed to do something then police shouldn't be either is quite pathetic. A bar-maid is allowed to pour pints in a pub, but when I do it... Groundworkers are allowed to dig up roads, but if i were to do it... Police have a job which gives them authority, to enforce their authority they are authorised to carry and use weapons. REspect the law and respect their authority and you wont have any problems, unless you run into that 1 policeman in 10000 that abuses his authority and he is in bad mood and you are unlucky to around him when he decides to lash out.

paperduck, we don't have to imagine a scenario, we know what happened. The police had a DWI check point, he ran it, lead them on a high speed chase before they pinned him, which is where this video begins. Then he surrenders and the cops send the dog in to rip his throat out.

I encourage everyone to do the following when they see video clips like this: note your initial stance. Then think of a scenario (perhaps leading up to the portion you just saw) that would fully justify the *opposite* of your initial reaction. It's a good mental exercise and prevents having a strong opinion in case your first assessment was wrong.

Yeah, well if you hire thugs with 70 IQ's to be Policemen, this is what you're going to get.

The release of a dog is considered use of deadly force.

It's all about perspective, if a "civilian" did this, it would be seen as horrible. Since a "cop" did it, it's seen as okay. This is brainwashing at work.

Follow Up
South Carolina courts cleared them and the officers won't be charged.

Drawman,
"The dog is part of their arsenal so why not? If he got out when asked it wouldn't have happened"

Because he was cornered and couldn't flee. He had his hands up and was clearly surrendering. The only reason to send the dog in was to deliberately inflict injury.

@drawman, his car was hit and he was sitting there with his hands up. Since his car was hit on that side, he might not have been able to get out. Plus we don't know what was said to him or when. There's no way to know that he didn't get out when asked.

I don't care what he did, he was sitting there with his hands up. He was not posing a threat. As much as I am against violence toward animals, this guy had every right to defend himself against this unwarranted attack. The police are the ones at fault and should be held accountable. If the dog gets injured, that is their fault too.
