We've just had a large low-pressure system pass over the north of the UK, so it was a bit windy! We also had spring-tides, so lots of east-coast flood-damage. The Thames- barrier recorded the highest flood-surges since it was built. Hemsby had a few buildings fall in the sea.

Landing a small plane in a crosswind is tough, but it's nothing like doing it in a big jet. The procedures are completely different.

In a small plane, you can bank into the wind and put it down one wheel at a time. However, big jets can't take all that weight on one set of wheels; they have to put both of the main gear down at the same time. That means they have to keep the plane level and crab into the wind, then kick the rudder to straighten it out at literally the last second before touchdown. Too early and they'll start to drift off the runway in the downwind direction; too late and they'll jump off the runway in the upwind direction -- that or just snap off the gear -- from hitting the runway with the plane turned at an angle.

Looking through a long telephoto lens makes the angle look worse than it is, but I'd still give this one a pucker factor of ~8.

I had the pleasure of riding in the copilot seat of a Beechcraft King Air and landing in a strong crosswind. I never want to experience anything like that ever again.

It was an attempted "crab walk" landing. Difficult to do, but necessary for high cross winds.

The pilot made a good call. The landing is just as critical as the takeoff- if you can't land properly then pull up,come back around and try again.

Hit a crosswind landing once. Not fun. Good thing the pilot knew his stuff.

It wasnt the wind, it was the fact that the pilot realised he was landing in Birmingham and said "forget this, I'm off".

I've been in a couple of those. Good decision.
F*ck that landing and try again.

If it's Birmingham, the pilot was probably just drunk.
