The map of Taxifornia is spot on. My local state rep proposed splitting Ca. a few years ago along those exact lines; Coastal counties would be West California and the rest would be "real" California..

What he calls "El Norte" is already called "Aztlan" - look it up.

I know at least for TIDEWATER. He would sprinkling facts over gross over-characterizations and he glazed over pretty large portions of the area's history. I'd say 50% true, 50% just his BS. This is more of a map of this guys personal stereotypes of different parts of America.

In broad terms that makes a lot of sense, although I can't speak to the details.

If a region is settled (and it's initial character, at least, defined) by a coherent community consistiong largely of tradesmen, merchants and craftsmen bringing their families and a sense of governance, very often members of the same church then that region will develop differently from a region settled by single young men from a herding culture where the ability to protect your flocks from outlaws was paramount and where government was a distant and useless entity that sometimes showed up wanting taxes or to stop you doing something.

Availability of women is another factor. Where families immigrated the best chance of getting a mate was to demonstrate that you were the kind of guy who could progress in life, maintain a family home and be a respected part of the community. Where women were rare and it was every man for himself the best way to get a mate was to be more badass than the nex

Clearly the author never visited the UP. If he did he'd realize half the places around here are more of a back-water hillbilly hellhole than most of the deep south.
Hunting season starts in three days, so all the camo wearing hicks are whooping themselves up into a frenzy right now. Stuffing their cheeks full of chaw, and rubbing deer piss in their hair.

Even though I'd debate how the author breaks up the different regions of the U.S., I can agree how extremely different the various regions are and the diversity of the U.S. That's why it upsets me when people say, "I hate Americans." That'd be like me saying "I hate all Europeans," because of something arbitrary like be basing my prejudice toward the whole continent because of how rude and condescending the French are. I live in liberal San Francisco and grew up in Nevada, but because of how corrupt our government is and how ignorant many Americans can be, I'm classified as a terrible person simply for being American. I'm on a rant right now because I'm traveling through Europe for the next month and just hassled earlier on the metro in Madrid simply for being American. Oh well, I always do my best to exemplify we're not all bad, or the same.

Yankeedom should have been called F***tardistan. And I'm still counting on the big earthquake to separate the Left Coast from the rest of the country.

Why is greater Appalachia covering places that are nowhere near the Appalachians?

Residents are “intensely suspicious of lowland aristocrats and Yankee social engineers.”

How fitting!

Well token, you live on a continent called North America (overshadowed by your more dynamic sibling. ahem.) And there has been considerable ping pong back and forth between the two, so yeah.

Rest assured, after we're done scoping out our relevant background you just kind of fade away back into obscurity...

The characteristics of "El Norte" were bullschitt.
Guv'ment Dole and ignorance are much more highly prized methinks.

Born Yankeedom, living in Deep South.. although I'm sure most people consider Florida it's own other entity by now.
