"food" or "feed me" is like the most basic symbol that non-asl speakers use without even knowing. Many if not most ASL signs mimic real actions, therefore a lot of hearing people perform signs on the regular and don't even know it.

Sure, why not. Our dog and cats tell us things with specific body language. Our dog, for example, will face us, bow down with her front legs out in front of her like a stretch and make a quiet howl ... means "Pardon me sir, I would like to go outside and relieve myself if that's okay with you."
