I'm a hunter, and I can tell you it's a very controlled and organized system, and the states usually tightly control the license/lotto distribution.

This example is an extreme outlier.

Fox hunting is only illegal on th3e British Isles, because the aristocracy hunted them into endangered (on the island) status.

Also, there aren't only 22 in the state, they can kill 22, then stop.

We have deer hunts on our state park near my house. They are allowed to kill 100 deer, then they must stop. Those types of hunts happen all the time.

South Alabama. Alligator hunts are legal, until the region reaches 1000 alligators killed then the season is over.

Also I would hardly say 22 cougars in a state with an area of 77,354 sq. miles to be on the verge of being overpopulated by cougars.

This isn't talking about the whole state it's a specific area of the state.

I didn't say we should "get rid of" cougars. They have a place in the wild. Note, I said in the W I L D, inside our national parks and wildlife areas. Not among our ranches, farms or such. Understand?

Sure, it's illegal right now...

But times may change

And if the farmers along with Cameron get their way? Release the hounds!!

I think the point 5cats is making is that no cougar should be hunted- there is no reason to do that at all. if what Crakr says is true we should get rid of dogs and cars- they are far more lethal. Fox-hunting is now illegal BTW...

Dila: "There is some much environmental ignorance in your statement. First the minor point, the threat to wildlife is predator-prey relationship.."

We used to have wolves in the prairie states too, are you suggesting they return as well? I surely hope not. In the national parks, I can see the point of having carnivorous predators, but not outside them. There are very good reasons why they were extirpated in the first place.

As for cougar on human attacks, only 50 in a hundred years seems low, until you're the person that gets their throat ripped out. Cougars have a bad reputation for not getting along well with mankind, same as wolves do.

Personally, I'm not going to go out and hunt a cougar. The idea doesn't appeal to me. However, I'm not going to freak out and stomp my feet against it because of some article that couldn't even get it's facts straight. And that @5Cats is the point you seek.

@5Cats

And the keystone pipeline isn't a large threat to the state or it's agriculture either. However the farmers and ranchers are making a big enough fuss over it to keep it from being completed here.

So, who do you think is pressing the state to have these animals hunted in the first place?

...more cougars to prey on the deer? it might SAVE human lives!

Ironic, eh?

@djwajda: Of course cougars will sometimes prey on domestic animals. So do BEARS WOLVES COYOTES HAWKS EAGLES OWLS and more!
What's your point? Killing 4 cougars is NOT going to "save livestock" in the State of Nebraska... not one single one.

@greenbasterd: It's expressly illegal to use dogs to hunt cougars in Nebraska happily.

@CrakrJak & @auburnjunky: Ok, FACT time!
- Cougars live quite close to humans, but are exceedingly shy of them!
- Pet dogs (domestic) or feral dogs are FAR more damaging to livestock than cougars.
- Pet and feral dogs are also MUCH more likely to attack or kill humans than cougars. It's a fact!

By any measure? Cougars are exceedingly LOW on the scale of dangerous animals in North America. Deer kill more people, a LOT more, it's a fact!

Of course if there were MORE cougars to

@drawman61

Well, ty for making me feel 20 yrs younger!

A study was conducted that out of 14 midwestern states between 1990-2008 Nebraska was 1st with 67 sightings. Second place was North Dakota and then it trickles down to 1 or 2 sightings. Now in Nebraska it's up to something like 92 sightings. That's an additional 25 sightings in 1 yr!

Nebraska is mainly an agricultural state. That means we supply the country with a lot of corn, grain and meat. Meat comes from, you guessed it, animals!

Now, you take into account that these big cats are seemingly comfortable enough to be sighted in larger cities like Omaha as recently as 2012, how comfortable do you think they would be attacking defenseless cows and pigs?

Seriously, make sure to do some research before you post something that makes it sound like they're killing an animal to extinction. Also make sure you don't have someone on I-A-B that actually lives in the state in question.

Controlled hunts are vital to the ecosystem. If the cougar numbers become too great, other wildlife may be killed off, or the cougar may encroach human settlements.

They are not endangered.

@CrakrJak: There is some much environmental ignorance in your statement. First the minor point, the threat to wildlife is predator-prey relationship, a perfectly natural and important aspect of nature. To the larger issues on your statement. Mountain lions are not a big threat to people. In the last 100 years there were 50 recorded attacks and most of those attacks on non-fatal. Sure attacks have happened, but when compared to practically every other cause of death, I would say being attacked by a cougar is one of the last things to worry about. For the livestock, sure that can cause some problems. But there are also a lot of simple things that farmers can do to protect their livestock. Things that are done I don't know, how about every single place on this planet where there is livestock. Also I would hardly say 22 cougars in a state with an area of 77,354 sq. miles to be on the verge of being overpopulated by cougars.

Hunter-gatherers don't hunt for trophy BTW
McG- that was my point, it's called sarcasm.

@djwajda- dress it up how you want, it's still slaughter for the fun of it. And fox hunting is just as disgusting. You're 40-49 really? You come across like a 16-20 yr old.

Cougars were extirpated from Nebraska a hundred years ago. Now because of rising deer populations they are returning and breeding. Cougars are not only a threat to wildlife but rancher's herds and people as well. It's best to keep control of their population now, before it gets out of hand.

Btw, finding even a few, to hunt, will still be a hell of a challenge even with dogs. I seriously doubt if more than a few of those tags are used.

I expected a wacky, strung out conspiracy. Then I read an article about my home state that was inaccurate and realized it was just as laughable as a conspiracy.
