"Extremism is rarely a good idea. You can't eat nothing but plants and stay healthy."

Gerry: I've been vegan for three years and have never been healthier. My diet doesn't require harm to an animal, and I feel good about that. It's not extremist to follow my conscience, is it?

@mcgovern tell that to my Brahmin ancestors All vegetarians, all lived well into 90s and died of old age

My grandfather is 84 eats meat and used to drink like a fish for a good part of his life...Tell me what sounds like living more?

On the bright side you shouldn't change too much when you get to that age because your diet has probably already made you completely miserable.....

Extremism is rarely a good idea. You can't eat nothing but plants and stay healthy. Neither can you exist solely on McDonalds Big Macs. Life is about balance.

@broizfam to yeild one kilo of meat a minimum of 7 kilos of grain feed is required, do you jow see how that would feed a lot more? Also all of the growth hormones, antibiotics fed to the animals seep in to food chain, waters and soil. Grains in particular have long shelf life and do not require ( energy consuming) special storage and consequent wastage.
So what have we learned today?

B12 is produced by bacteria, we only get it from meat because the animals get it from the earth

Perhaps you should take up munching dirt then too!

Mabey if he went vegan it'd reverse death too!!!

B12 is produced by bacteria, we only get it from meat because the animals get it from the earth, they don't produuce it themselves, same with every nutrient, nothing essential is produced by animals, it all comes from plants and bacteria. A well balance vegan diet is far superior to a meat and dairy based diet, there is no counter argument. No other diet can reverse diabetes and heart disease, a vegan one can.

"We evolved incisors to rip flesh."

Incisors are a trait shared by most mammals, whether they eat flesh or not. We did not evolve them for eating meat. Gorillas have prominent canines but are primarily herbivorous. Camels have big incisors but are strict herbivores.

@Gerry,
If your vegetarian daughter-in-law to be wants steak knives, maybe you should buy your son body armor!

@sutra46,
Slaughtering forests in favor of making farmland is environmentally friendly?

"vegetarians evidently enjoy better health"
2 reasons: 1)Typically people who are that concerned about their diet are generally more health conscious. 2)They're also typically noisier about how healthy they are, making it more evident (whether it's true or not).

Oh yeah, last thing.

I mentioned that contamination of food and water in the wild could provide enough B12. That's because the dung of many animals (including humans) contains B12 in a form humans can use. B12 is a byproduct of some bacteria, some of which are in the guts of many animals (including humans). They're further along than the part of the digestive system that extracts B12, so we can't use the B12 they produce other than by eating dung.

Personally, I'd prefer to take B12 supplements made in a lab (they grow vats of bacteria and harvest and purify the B12), but if you want a natural purely vegatarian diet you'll have to eat some poop. Not much poop (human B12 requirements are tiny), but still...it's poop.

Here's a quick and rough way to get some idea of whether or not you know enough to seriously consider a purely vegetarian diet:

1) Do you know about B12?

2) Do you know why it's easy to eat much more protein than your body's requirements for proteins and still be deficient in protein? Note the plural - it's not a mistake. There are millions of proteins and your body never directly uses any of the proteins you eat. You need to know what it does with them, what essential amino acids are and why vegetarians can't use the "eat enough protein" simplification that omnivores can.

3) Do you know what other nutrients are difficult to obtain from plants and which plants you need to eat in what quantities in order to get them? Iron is the best known one, but it's not the only one and it's not even the most problematical one (that's calcium).

Humans are versatile omnivores and can get everything other than B12 from plants, but you need to know w

So yeah, B12.

There are NO plant sources of B12 that humans can use. None. At all. Some plants have some similar chemicals, but they're not the same.

Humans store and re-use B12 very efficiently, so switching to a diet devoid of B12 will not have immediate effects. You will gradually deteriorate, a process which might take several *years*. Since the deteriotation is gradual, it can easily go un-noticed until you hit the really major effects such as mood swings, reduced intelligence, memory loss, dementia...oh, and add in pernicious anemia and a whole slew of other problems. By that time, hard luck, the damage is done to nervous tissue and is probably permanent to some extent.

One brief summary here:

B12 deficiency

Healthy diet? Only if you take care...just like an omnivorous die

vegetarians evidently enjoy better health

That depends on how they're doing it.

It is fundamentally more difficult for humans to meet their nutritional needs from eating only plants, because we are physiologically adapted to being omnivores. Strictly speaking it's impossible because of B12, but contamination of food and water could provide that in the wild.

Because it's fundamentally more difficult, anyone who does it properly will *have* to eat a balanced, nutritious diet...and *that's* what makes it a healthier diet.

Also, people who are purely vegetarian have to take more care with their diet anyway in order to avoid animal-based food, so again there's an inbuilt requirement for taking more care with your diet.

I have absolutely no judgement of what diet one chooses, though these are the facts eating vegetarian diet is environmentally friendly and vegetarians evidently enjoy better health (am sure some moron will post about how healthy he is on steak and eggs and bully to ya)
Been vegetarian most of my life, have enjoyed fish and an occasional lamb.
recently gone vegetarian again and I feel so much better.
Don't knock it till you try it.

My boy's getting married to a vegetarian. I was looking for a gift and saw an item she registered that made me question her commitment. What does a vegetarian need with steak knives?

Not to mention the slow evolution of wisdom teeth no longer growing. Y'know, the extra molars we had to help grind more coarse vegetable matter. Yeah, no longer need them.

@SCFan ~ The logic is that you feel it is immoral to use another living animal for any reason.

Even if you are not killing it for food, you are still typically abusing the animal [think dairy and egg production] for the food stuff it provides.

So, in the same way that you would NEVER take from another person, you would also NEVER take from another animal.

If it is not freely given, then you do not have a right to take it.

I have evolved to be at the top of the food-chain. I am designed to eat everything and anything in order to survive. If I eat all veg, then I am depriving some poor animal further down the chain: If I eat all meat, I am depriving my fellows at the top of the chain, therefore I eat everything.
Included in the 'everything' is sugar and it's products. These are what will kill me; beer, pies, pastries, cakes, crisps, biscuits etc.
Other things that will kill me include; cars, buses, lightning, gas, fire, flood etc etc.

We evolved incisors to rip flesh.

We are meant to eat all foods.

Our Appendix no longer functions, because we aren't meant to eat that many grassy foods, which the Appendix helped when we were very, very primitive.
