If it took the pic itself, where is the arm holding the camera? It would have to be in a "self pic". Also, why is there a reflection of a person's head and shoulders reflected in the lens of the instrument on the top left?

@ Nikkida: As I mentioned earlier, Curiosity's robotic arm took several photographs which were then merged into this one image. The partial views of the robotic arm in each image were removed, which is why the robotic arm is missing from the photo. In my screenshot below, however, I've outlined the attachment point of the robotic arm in red. You can even see the shadow of the robotic arm's camera and other instruments on the wheel and the ground at the front of the photo.

Make sense? I hope so. We need you to be smart about these things. After all, it's your generation (not so much mine) that will be exploring Mars on foot.

Now I know that this is all a fake. Where is the arm holding the camera that took this pic? Just like the moon landings

Too bad there wasn't an alien to photo-bomb it.

@ Afterburn001 and Auburnjunky:

In the illustration below, you can see the robotic arm that was used to take the photos that were assembled into this image: it's at the lower left, with an arm that looks candy-striped. The partial images of the arm in each photo were left out of the composite photo, so the arm is entirely missing from the final image. In actuality, the arm is attached to the left of the mount in the front left of the photo that looks like a tiered wedding cake on its side.

NASA periodically has Curiosity photograph itself not because it's fun (which, of course, it is), but because it's important to check on the dust buildup on the vehicle and on the condition of the wheels.

It isn't clear what's holding the camera.

Maybe it's because I was around before all of this technology became mainstream, but this is still one of the coolest and most amazing things I have ever seen. Pictures from another planet! Landscapes, mountains, ground. From another planet! Just mindblowingly amazing!

Link: Curiosity Takes A Selfie On Mars [Pic] [Rate Link] - NASA's Curiosity rover used a robotic arm to take a series of self-images, which were then assembled into this shot.
