they'd wait till a moment of high tension and nuke Thule Air Base

ROFL!! You think if they got their hands on something that crazy they'd be able to contain themselves and not try to hit Israel and instead travel to Greenland...WHEW!

"...can't keep themselves safe..."
Other nations are not flying them around, 24/7.
Normal people are, you know, afraid of them...

@3002-3038 The release of the information that three out of four safety features failed is new. We all know that the U.S had a penchant for accidentally throwing nukes around like confetti, but not how incredibly close something world changing happened from that.

It would not have been that much of a problem to the well prepared. The public were easily able to protect themselves from nuclear blasts by hiding under a suitable desk or table.

PS, imagine Pakistan. If the Americans can't keep themselves safe, Imagine Pakistan. Imagine how easy it'd be for the Taliban to get one and nuke a city. Or, if they were really clever, they'd wait till a moment of high tension and nuke Thule Air Base

I've just finished reading Command and Control. Almost every couple of years there's been a near nuke incudent.

I wouldn't exist if it went off. That's where my mother grew up.

There's still one off the coast of Georgia that has never been found.

"Today if that happened I bet it would be:

*flip coin of random oil-containing countries and blame them*" Well, the United States is an oil containing country, so the coin might be the way to go...

@richanddead I knew about the Spanish one, but the point is the North Carolina one almost actually detonated.

Old news is old. Anyone over 45 knows what it was like growing up knowing you'd see The Bomb go off in your town. Didn't happen, but we still grew up under the fear of it.

@FredSpudman:
You forget we dropped 4 of the same kind of H-bomb on you guys, one bomb disintegrated and released seven pounds of plutonium were splattered over 558 acres of Palomares, forcing an $80 million clean up by the United States.

Clinton also lost the football for a few minutes and lost the codes for several months.

The Russians lost dozens of bombs but they don't like to talk about that, unless they need help getting them back.

It's nice to still have a decent quality newspaper such as the Guardian, digging up stuff like this. Unlike almost all the others.

Thing is, 20MT would have severely f***ed up a hell of a big area. You can find out how much by using this: http://nuclearsecrecy.com/nukemap/

Then there's the fall out - the prevailing winds would have carried it over all of the major NE Seaboard - Philadelphia, Washington DC, New York, Boston, etc etc..

(Assuming the US didn't check the facts first and instead simply launched everything at Russia starting WWIII).

Still, we were all saved by a cheap faulty electrical switch eh, so that's fine then.
