The older ones had nicer bodies... but of the bigger generation, I can see why Arnie won Mr Universe etc, to me that's as big as someone can be without appearing freakish.

The difference isn't as extreme as pictures like these make it out to be. The same bodybuilder will look quite different in daily life to how they look pumped up, oiled and posing on a well lit stage. So a realistic comparison would have to be done under the same circumstances.

I think that the biggest bodybuiders today are over the top, cartoonish figures when competing (I initially assumed that the pics of Ronnie Coleman that I saw were fakes done as caricatures of bodybuilding), but this set of pictures exaggerates the difference.

They were, because the muscles were real and only came from strength training. No 'roids other crap just to make them look good.

OK...please explain to me how modern muscles are fake. Synthol, yes, that's fake, but that's not muscle.

Also, while we're on the subject of steroids, please explain how steroids create all this fake muscle you're talking about, without any exercise.

Which leads me to the next question - how do you think that all bodybuilders are getting away with using fake weights to exercise their fake muscles in their fake gyms? The weights are made from polystyrene and nobody ever notices or says anything? That conspiracy belief seems rather implausible to me.

I'll bet the old dudes were stronger.

What about WSM where steroids are strictly banned?
They may not look as cut as body builders(because they focus on utility not look) but they're just as big if not bigger.

Older ones are better. The modern bodybuilder looks over-inflated to me. Their egos are definitely over-inflated.

It's not just steroids. It's also increased knowledge of nutrition (including supplements to optimise nutrition) and increased interest resulting in a bigger potential base of competitors. I think that's probably a bigger factor than is often thought, because biology places a limit on muscularity that isn't necessarily the same for everyone. I'd be interested in what Ronnie Coleman's natural level of myostatin is - I'd bet it's much lower than average.

Many people are very quick to assume steroid use and to think of steroids as some kind of magic muscle potion, like Popeye's spinach.

Jack LaLanne was the man. Died at the age of 94 and was still kicking ass, fitness-wise and like you said - nothing but healthy food and hard work.

So, yeah, I decided to look up when anabolic steroids were invented and when they first began being used for non-medical reasons. They were invented in the 30's and used on men who were unable to produce enough testosterone and then used during WW2 to treat malnourished soldiers and enhance performance. After the war, athletes began using them to give them an edge in competitions. And now you know.

The icon: Jack Lalaine. No steroids, just healthy food, the right strategy, and the necessary effort.

@korahn - agreed. You could look at the old time bb's and admire the work that went in. Nowadays we watch to see a freak show.

@Forplay2k Jack LaLanne was a drating beast. Sure there may be many roided up "bodybuilders" but none of them could hope to match what LeLanne was.

The vintage bodybuilders just looked like incredibly fit guys, not Transporter malfunctions.
