@drawman61-I googled UK population density. The Daily Telegraph map seemed to show what I was attempting to get across.

'English' as a language in the UK, is written and spelled the same way regardless of where you are in the UK. (With one or two exceptions). Differing dialects make some speech almost unintelligible. 'Actual English' is known as 'Received Pronunciation', (RP), and only exists as a dialect that can be understood by the largest percentage of the population. A very small number of people actually talk in 'RP', it has a south-east bias, but comes from nowhere in particular.
The map gives an approximation of population density; from this it can be seen why RP is south-eastern.
A southerner who has not travelled much would be baffled by the unintelligible noises emitted by a northerner. The Northerner can understand the southerner, because of RP.

"American English" appears to me a mish-mash of the poorly educated masses, black and latino slang. I look forward to the day when Chinese English becomes standard and Rs are made illegal.

We should have the option to take 'properly spoken English' for school foreign language requirement.

"To be fair I doubt anyone speaks actual English anymore."

Not in Yorkshire.

Most high school students today couldn't pass 3rd-grade English 50 years ago.
