Hey Guys I get it now... if we cut down tress we solve the over population issue... because then there won't be enough oxygen for everyone... that we breathe...

Actually, you have it exactly backwards. Cutting down trees and putting the wood to use in permanent structures and then replanting the forests to grow new trees increases the amount of 02 and decreases the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere.

If we really wanted to decrease CO2 levels, we would be wrapping waste paper in plastic and putting it into landfills (aka carbon sequestration), not recycling it.

When I was a kid we only had one tree in the neighborhood and all the kids had to share it.

"If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might, if they screamed all the time, for no good reason."

papajon0s1 is correct.

Trees/wood is a natural resource and a raw material. It's too useful for people who use this material for them NOT to make sure of a future supply. It's abundance and renewability make it cheap and useful.

Just a few things made with wood: paper and paper products, Rayon, cork, inks, varnish, tires, lumber (and everything made from), space-craft re-entry shields, film, insulation, artificial flavoring, adhesives, trupentine, camphor, waxes, crayons, tannin, charcoal, pine oil, pitch, musical instruments, furniture, chewing gum, oil spill control agents, cosmetics, baby foods, cider, vitamins, lacquer, rubber gloves, mulch, nail polish, toothpaste, syrup, antiacids, shampoos, menthol, medicinies, energy, sausage casings, torula yeast, staine remover, imitation bacon, sponges, shoe polish, colognes, fruit pie filling, suspending agent for soda, ice cream thickener, disinfectants, gummed tape, linoleum, disposable medical clothing.

Dumb. I work in the printing industry and the paper manufacturers make darn certain they have plenty of trees. It's pure idiocy to run yourself out of your raw easily renewable material. In fact, they do a whole lot more on a whole lot less land.

Trees are great things but very large and have huge effects ont he area aruond them. Plus, they take a lot of space. We have enough oxygen around, we just need to start getting rid of CO2 from the atmospher. Which you can do with Algae in a big container in a bus stop.

You have no argument to present, and cannot justify your bizarre attack on Ollie. Why bother posting, it only makes you look an idiot?

The planet does not need "saving". Idiotic sentiment.

Developed countries are all increasing their tree cover rapidly. Economic development (including spreading internet access) will plant more trees than any dumb campaigning.

I'm OK, my oxygen comes in canisters and is delivered to my door every couple of days..and sooner if I run out.

I should start stockpiling it all so I'm covered if there is a global shortage.

And they produce no WIFI. This is truly the dumbest and maybe the most up to date generation we've ever produced.... KILL THEM ALL.

All I need is the air that I breathe... Hey kids! A couple of years ago, the Arbor Day Foundation (or something like that), sent me a mailer and when I sent it back, I got five trees. Really. Okay one was kind of dead alreadym and one never really thrived, but we have three lovely trees, and it only cost us five dollars each, I think. Can't remember exactly, but it was cheap.

If trees were like wifi, the ability to access the oxygen would require a password or have a weak oxygen signal.

There are more trees now in the US than there were when Columbus landed.

Trees only consume CO2 and give off O2 when they are increasing their mass, i.e., growing. In an old-growth forest when trees fall and rot, the wood is consumed by insects, bacteria, and fungi, so all the carbon in the tree eventually ends up back in the atmosphere.

The net CO2 uptake and O2 output of an old-growth forest -- including the entire Amazon basin -- is zero.

That's it, buy all the hype about the nice, helpful trees. Then, when your guard is down ....

shame that's not entirely true. plants intake nearly as much oxygen at night as they output during the day.
