Almost certainly NOT Mormon origin. (Was one for 30+ years). Terminology is all wrong. "Christ Jesus" wouldn't be used. "Ministry" isn't used. And Mormons don't have "offering plates". Could have been a atypical Bishopric, but this is a highly unorthodox (by Mormon standards) letter. I haven't stepped foot in a Mormon church for 12+ years, but they aren't exactly known for changing with the times.

Just pointing out... I was born and raised Catholic and while some priests took the financials way way way too seriously, I have never once been forced to give anything to anyone in any parish I've ever been in. That would the end of that church for me. I knew a African-American priest once who gave nearly every cent he had to the poor all the time. He rarely had any money to buy himself food. "Someone is always moved by God to offer me a sandwich", he said to me.

This is a Mormon letter from the looks of it mykunter, and they are quite serious about their tithing; it's one of the reasons I have so very, very little respect for their cult.
@Jake Justus, my mom is Mormon and I have actually heard her say (more than once) "The more money I give to the church, the more money I have!" .... This coming from a woman who's had to declare bankruptcy twice in her life already.
You can't reason with Mormons, they are (almost all of them, there are a FEW exceptions) crazy and brain-washed even more so than most religious people, I find.

Donations should go to those in need. Jesus chewed out the priests of his day for accepting donations and not going out of their way to do God's work
@Agentsmith, you're on a roll today! It's said that Jesus wouldn't be allowed into the inner sanctum were he to return.

@Xprez, you just about sum up religious nut-jobs: don't like what you see-ignore it.

Nothing wrong with that. If you are a member you have a say. If you don't pay you're not a member. No pay, no say. They would be wrong to disallow attendance of services by non-members, but that is not what this is about.

I find it interesting that Christians think their God needs money.

@ Lemon - Me? I'm not stupid, I don't give to Christian charities that think I am an abomination. Duh, that's like Jesse Jackson giving to the KKK. No, superstition is for others, not me.

@Gerry1of1

i think you should make sure to get a receipt from the big guy that whatever you got is really from him, else 10% is a pretty stiff fee.

i'm confused about haggai, what about income from stocks and bonds, foreign exchange and derivatives?

mykunter,
"Could you provide the book, chapter and verse?"

Genesis 14:20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand! And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

Genesis 28:22 And this stone, which I have set up for a pillar, shall be God's house. And of all that you give me I will give a full tenth to you.

Haggai 2:8 The silver is mine, and the gold is mine, declares the Lord of hosts

let's see, xx% off the top for taxes, then xx% for tithes, and that leaves how much to provide for one's kids and family????

That would be the end of my time at that church. I would give what I could and felt compelled to give. Don't give me the 10% crap.

@Johanvb

The Bible says that? Really? Could you provide the book, chapter and verse? Not that I really give a sh*t... I just call B.S.

One a side note, I know of a "Reverend" that drives around in BMW 750 Li. Now I see what makes that possible.

You should want to give, not be pressured or forced to give. I'd be finding me a new church.

Mormon church makes you provide your tax return to prove you tithed+.

If only not-giving them money would make the guv'ment leave me alone and remove my name from it's roster.

@Jake_Justus

According to the bible your should donate 10% of your earnings. No matter how little your income, there's always 10%. In return God will provide for you.

Nonetheless i find this manner of addressing very unchristian.

Interesting that "low on funds" or "financial problems" don't appear under Reasons. Guess they don't want to hear that.
