Britain was great, but now, looks like we are the soft touch of the world, immigrants take the piss, and the EU crap we are bound to and human rights act crap pretty much fecks us up, and no one in power has the balls to address this, Im ashamed my forefathers fought and died for this country for this

Reading all these nationalistic, puffed up, claims of glory and victory that were in fact won by a previous generation is fudgecking depressing.

I lost two grandparents recently in the space of 18 months and they both saw action in the Second World War.
My maternal Grandfather saw action in Malta and jungle warfare in Burma. My maternal Grandmother served in the ATS driving trucks.
I'm sure many of your families also fought in this and other wars around the world.

To fob off the sacrifices made by them and by the millions who never came home with claims of "we won the war all by ourselves and saved your asses" is cheap, tacky and embarrassing.

We are all of one world and in the grand scheme of things countries don't seem all that important and are a fairly silly concept when you think about it.

Try looking at the world without the filter of your national flag in front of your eyes.

Backagain you absolutely did benefit from the Marshall Plan the idea was to shore up Europe from Communist takeover by rebuilding their economies and infrastructure, every Soviet territory backed out of it (unsurprisingly).

Anyway this reminds me of what John Oliver (senior British correspondent for The Daily Show) once said of the Empire, "People long to be treated poorly that politely once again." XD

@inversegrav, when your home country means crawling around in the dust looking for food, I'd say Britain must looked like it's paved with f*****g gold. FREE to the free-loaders who get ahead of those born here for jobs, houses etc.
@MrRugby, you're exactly the pen-pushing type that enforces these rules from your petty little office in your petty little department. So you can get yourself elected and decide where the next zebra crossing will be put in the High street.

Drawman - you could of course argue that the reason Britain has these public services is because we got rich off the countries in the empire?

Plus, I don't think your argument is particularly watertight anyway.

@inversegrav: It is different for different people in different circumstances. No tax for the unemployed but still entitled to the health care, the average worker is about 20% tax and I can't remember what your circumstances is to get the higher tax rates... but I've never gone higher then 20.

And yes tax does partly pay for health care for all, it is called 'The real world is not free for special you'.

And boy are we paying the price. We now let anyone move in, get a free house, free medical, free education and a big bag of money.
We need to go the American route of pretending to be everyone's friend, send in our armies to 'defend' these other countries and while we are here we'll look after that oil for you, thank you very much.

This Horrible histories has a negative apologist view of history. After WW1 and WW2 Britain let countries get independence when they wanted as there was a understanding of self determination. Former British countries are also generally doing a lot better in the world then their french counterparts because Britain helped them out as much as possible with things like the Privy council and the commonwealth. It was not just because Britain was broke (yeah we paid over the odds for American help really nice of you guys and as we weren't commies didn't benefit from Marshall plan) and couldn't afford to subdue the countries any more. Any territory Britain has oversight for if they want to leave have a referendum and it's done...

@turdburglar Britain would not have been conquered by Germany they failed in doing that then invaded Russia. But equally Britain would not have been able to Liberate Europe without Russia and the USA. It was a stalemate.

Bealzebubble - Bull crap. Hate it as much as you like, but without russia and America, brittan was fuct.
Saved by the greatest generation.
Only the lamest, most pathetic, and ignorant generation (you) would deny it.

Keep making up fairytales. Keep believing America and russia "helped". Unless "help" is a limey synonym for "saved your asses"...you are full of crap.

@turdburglar Russia and the US helped win the war but the Germans didn't have a chance of invading the UK while the RAF was still around. Without the air superiority the Royal Navy would have cut the invasion force into pieces. The Germans had no real capital ships to defend an invasion force and were relying on bombing the large British ships which meant getting rid of the RAF. They failed in the Battle of Britain and the RAF emerged stronger.

Except British didn't discover Canada, France was there first then the British took it from France and when America became independant the american royalist went North to Canada and took the rest of it.
