"Hope it's water and dirt proof. Gonna stick it on my damn cat."

Yeh but you're going to be sitting there in the quiet - your phone will start beeping and it will be just like a scene from the second Alien movie.

The site says they're waterproof. That's one of their lame excuses for having to buy a new one each year - God forbid there should be a replaceable battery! There have, of course been waterproof items with replaceable batteries for years. Of course, if you could just change a battery for a couple of bucks, you wouldn't be paying them $25 a year, per unit, every year. I think it's a good bet that that's the actual reason for no replaceable battery.
Here are all the lame excuses:
1. Ease of Use - Trying to find the right coin cell battery is a pain. You never have to do this with Tile.
2. Waterproof - Tile is waterproof.
3. Thinner - Allows Tile to be much thinner.
4. Latest and Greatest - Once a year you get the latest and greatest Tile.

From the website:

No Android support?
At this time Android does not support Bluetooth 4.0. A few Android phone manufacturers have released BLE SDKs, however they are lacking in quality and stability. At Tile, the quality of our products is of utmost importance, and until there exists an Android platform that meets our quality standards, we will not be releasing a Tile app for Android.

Oh, man, I've been imagining something just like this for decades! I'm really bad at misplacing things, and having my bike keys ring in the living room when I'm trying to get to work would be fantastic!

Regarding the caption, *F* them if they can't take the joke.
Putting them on the pets? That's a GREAT idea!

Don't glue it to the bike. Instead, glue a piece of velcro to the frame (better under the seat, if there's room - less chance of damaging impacts). Glue the other velcro side to the tile. That way you don't have to break it off every year - just glue another piece of velcro onto the new tile.

I expect they'll increase the compatibility if the product takes off. Why spend all the money to make it globally compatible if you don't know whether it'll sell well enough?

The big question: What if you lose your phone?

@ Anyone Interested: Regarding the snooty caption, I wrote it as a tweak to all the Apple hatred expressed in the "Apple's Middle Finger" post from the other day. I didn't mean to offend anyone; my apologies if I did.

I can certainly see the potential for abuse by surreptitiously putting this in a woman's purse or the like. But I think with advances in technology, tracking products like this are inevitable. What's needed is to add a technology clause to existing anti-stalker legislation to make tracking someone electronically without their permission a crime.

In terms of non-evil applications for this device, I imagine that putting Tiles on dog and cat collars would be a good idea and could save a lot of pets.

Great! Now anyone with moderate computer skills can track your whereabouts as well as pin point your belongings at any given time. Thanks Apple!

And they can go thoroughly and completely f*ck themselves. Whenever someone comes out with an app or product like this for Apple and nothing else, I won't touch it. If they don't care about the money from the millions of other users out there, I don't care about them. If you don't like my opinion, you can join them.

It isn't good business to be that selective. The fact that you apparently have to buy a new one every year is pretty stupid too. I'll wait for something better that lasts longer and is cross platform.

I see the potential for mega abuse of this item. Especially when the system is upgraded to integrate with google maps and other platforms, etc. Ultimate creeper tool.

You need to buy a new one every year. There is no indication how much it's going to cost on subsequent purchases.

Bike: Glue it underneath the bottom of the frame.

It's a brilliant idea, but just looks boring. Now, see, if you could have it as a key ring teddy bear, or other variations...
