I'm confused, I looked up the definition of 'tip' and it is indeed a gratuity, but that definition says that it's how you show gratitude, how can you know how grateful you're going to be before you've even been served?

I disagree with the message. A tip is based on service and is not necessarily something that should be given automatically. However, there are very few instances where tipping is not appropriate, but one would not know this prior to receiving service.

My rule of thumb is 15% for barely passable service, 205 for average service, and 25% or (far) greater for good or exceptional service.

I have tipped more than 100% of the bill more often than I have chosen not to leave a tip. And regardless of the service, I always treat the waitstaff as human beings.

I'm glad I live in country where tipping is not a custom. If restaurants want to have good waiters they pay them accordingly. If waiters want to earn better money, then they work accordingly, just like every industry.

ohhh and one last thing.. if your friend isn't declaring his tips, I would refrain from announcing it to the world because that is tax evasion my friend :)

... Forgot to mention that your tips are calculated by the government based on your sales.. sell for 1k and it is assumed you received 150$ in tips and will be taxed accordingly..

pumba62, I'm not sure where you're located in Canada and or where you friend works, but that is absolute horse crap... You pay taxes on your tips no matter what, even if you don't get tips. When you work that sort of job, it is automatically assumed that you received gratuity and therefor are taxed on it. So if you don't tip, essentially the waitress / bartender partially paid for your drink. I speak from 1st hand experience, and not to mention 3 friends of mine are either bartenders or waiters and my gf's brother is a bartender as well. While yes I do believe that gratuity should be based on performance the 15% is a minimum here in Quebec, otherwise you don't get served, especially in Montreal bars. They aren't here to pay for you food and booze buddy, so if you can't tip stay home and pore your own drink and cook your own food.

This again? Why is it so hard to understand that a tip should be given based on the service received? And if you have a problem with that, get another job you cheap piece of sh*t.

Why not just increase the min wage and do away with tipping??

Go to a fast food place where they pay employees min wage and look at how much they give a f**k about you and their job.

I used to clean up waiting tables to demanding snobs. The whole wine presentation "is this acceptable" pour ladies first serve from the left blah blah blah. Paid for college!

cheap food prices? my ass.

anyway, in my dictionary "tip = reward for good service", hence crap service = no tip.

pay your employees the proper wages. if you don't want to do that, emigrate to china.

a mandatory tip is not a tip but a tax. please avoid newspeak.

I had a friend making about $700-800 a week in tips (tax free by the way) only working four days a week at LUNCH TIME!!!! So please do me a favor and cry on someone else's shoulder I work twice as long as you and take home about that amount after taxes in two weeks !!!

Remember to tip the bartender! It's how we keep a roof over our heads.

gymcoach29-"Why does the food industry get a pass on paying the minimum wage?"

Please repeat after me: 'Tips are Wages. Tips are Wages. Tips are Wages.'

Sure, pay everyone minimum wage and eliminate tipping. Couldn't be easier.

Of course, all the GOOD wait-staff will go find a job making what they were when they relied on tips, as good wait-staff make far above minimum.

Enjoy your mediocre service.

I am not going to tip somebody because I'll look like an d!ck if I don't. I don't care. If you serve me my food with a smile and some common decency you shall be tipped. Easy as that! Again one of those silly American cultural things.

What is this poo about increasing the wage AND ban tipping?!
Increase the wage and ALLOW tipping. It works over here in Europe.
As i said earlier i round up my payment to show my respect to the staff.
This way a waitress gets a decent wage no matter how well she does the job (if the service sucks i only pay what i owe and i do not return to the restaurant) and if she performs well i'll give her some extra's.

A low minimum wage will affect (where i live) pension, unemployment benefit and payment when you get sick.
If you have a normal income due to added tips you will have a problem when you get sick. Y will be based on your standard wage.
People with low standard income will be forced to go to work when they are ill because of the setback.

Try eating out in the UK... Really expensive (for decent food), all staff get at least minimum wage, and you still have to leave 10% unless you want to look like an ass.

So you are forced to tip because the Government wont allow them to earn more,
so this is a charity case??

"Because then waitstaff wouldn't have an incentive to kiss your ass."

Yes they would. They'd have the exact same incentive that the rest of us have: if you don't do your job well, you'll get fired.

It works for every other job. Waiting on tables is not a special case.

Duckboy87, my ex-boyfriend used to slap some money on the table and tell the waitperson that the whole thing was theirs unless he found something unsatisfactory with the experience of eating there. Which works... unless the cook did something unsatisfactory; then it wasn't the waitperson's fault.

Why does the food industry get a pass on paying the minimum wage? I would rather pay more for a meal and the waitstaff make a living wage than tip. I hate tipping especially when I am obligated to pay 15-20% without looking like an non-nice individual. I would prefer they just add the tip in the price of the meal and that way I never know...

I have a respect for tipping because I got tips at my first job as a delivery guy. I now work as a line cook at a restaurant, and let me tell you, servers have a piss easy job. Servers should be paid as cooks are, and the customer should have the choice of either tipping the server or the cook, or both. If they want to.

I always tip, but that being said, tipping is bull$#!+. Pay the staff a fair wage, price the food accordingly, and have a no-tipping policy.
