Have done it that way. But I'm a better musician than an artist so I cheat, lol.

handimanner: Don't know if that's speculation or if you've seen it/done it like that, but yeah! It reminded me that I did a newsletter cover illustration years ago by more or less scribbling on tracing paper over a photo of a logging locomotive, and it turned out surprisingly well! Got a good reception, at least.

"Or just sketch a face, then scribble all over it. Oh, wait, scribble ARTFULLY all over it!"

Nope. You don't know what you are talking about. The illustrations are composed of the scribbles, the shapes, the shading, everything. Look closely, look at the dark and light areas. Look at the contours, the edges. These are not just good drawings scribbled over.

TY. This is VERY good work.
How it's done: Make a copy of a photo (on thin paper), use a light box to shine thru the image onto a clean (also thin) piece of paper. Go wild with following the major drama lines. Scan the scribbled top-paper, print to art paper.

"It's obvious that a talented artist sketched the actual face, then doodled over the top to try and make it look cooler than it actually is."

No that isn't obvious.

I though that as well, but look at the edges, lines. There are no single clean strokes.

Obviously he probably lightly sketched a base down but the illustrations are composed of wild scribbles, not just drawn clean and then scribbled on top.

"My guess would be he's a fan. Doesn't make sense otherwise."

I just figured he thought the big wild beard would work nicely for this particular look.

Yep. That's Mr. Slice.
Odd choices. Jack Nicholson, Morgan Freeman, Sam Jackson and Kimbo Slice?
Which one of these is not like the others

There's a whole lot more than just scribbling going on here...

These are so cool. I wish I could draw half as good as that. My dad is an artist too, but I didn't inherit that gene and can't draw for poo.
