Seriously, it sensors F(u)kushima? right...

fudgeushima has the advantage that most of the reactor is intact and ALL fuel stayed inside the reactor vessels.

As you can see in the documentary above, at Chernobyl all fuel (TONS of the stuff, more than in all 4 fudgeushima reactors combined) has drained from the reactor vessel and flooded the lower floors. This means Chernobyl can never be cleaned up. The stuff is too spread out and far too dangerous to risk even considering to move it.

Once the reactor buildings have been stabilized and the decay heat has diminished enough at the fudgeushima site, the fuel can be removed and what is left will be a few tons of relatively safe low and medium level waste. (Lets not mention the umpteen gazillion tons of waste water they are having to store due to inadequate management)

China syndrome is nothing more than fearmongering. Even IF a fuel could make it all the way through the crust of the planet it would then harmlessly dissolve in the magma of our planets core. Not to mention the fact that even IF it could melt through solid rock, it would over time spread out and lose enough decay heat to solidify.

Also, No, I'm not from the Ukraine, but have a general interest in atomic energy and Chernobyl.
The problems with fudgeushima and Chernobyl are not even in the same ball park. fudgeushima right now is mostly about the containment of relatively TINY amounts of radiation and avoiding leakage of MOX fuel into the water table(containing highly poisonous heavy metals). The reactor itself is stable and people can work pretty safely even inside the buildings, with lifetime dosage limits less than a tenth of those allowed per year at chernobyl. (IE, the radiation levels are MUCH lower)

Mr_Ike: Right you are, I slipped in my background checks. Sorry!

Plans for the repairs are listed here.

The only problem with nuclear fuels is the duration of radioactivity. We have to deal with these for tens of thousands of years.

@LemonCurry: "oh? i sounds perfectly reasonable to me!"

What? That something could melt through the whole planet to the other side, when our current best technology can't even make it past the crust?

Well we can contain nuclear fuel using metal and concrete, so the elements inside the earth won't even notice it. Also how is it meant to fall upwards past the core since gravity would be switched? Doesn't take a genius to know China Syndrome is entirely impossible.

Thanks for the clip. A definite Chernobyl interest here. Does anyone know which documentary this clip is taken from?

... hummm, "Europe" = Ukraine?

Don't worry, bro, you're not the only country with a f.cked up power plant. We got one here in Japan too, and at least with Chernobyl, people take the problem seriously.

Well ok, perhaps not Bearded Papa, but everyone else.

Uhhmmm, fail on the description there. Repairs HAVE been made since. And repairs are ongoing. As we speak construction of the New Safe Confinement Structure is underway, to replace the original sarcophagus.

@LemonCurry, China Syndrome is absolute bullcrap. It CAN'T happen.

I was watching and wondering what was up with the Phantom of the Opera organ music. Then about thirty seconds in, the feedback brought me back to the video and made me jump and fart at the same time. Man, what's up with all the w words in the first sentence?

"thissi why NZ is nuclear freeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee"
i don't want to scare you, but chernobyl seems to be pretty much on the opposite site from nz on the globe, hopefully there'll be no china syndrome ...

no doubt in 300-400 years, when people have forgotten all about what's inside the sarcophagus, the future residents will open everything and form beautiful glass ornaments out of the elephant's foot.

Confining it is not difficult.
Bury it under a mountain of concrete.
The largest ever seen.

Of course, that takes willpower an money. So we'll just let it keep leaking.

Link: Footage From Inside the Chernobyl Reactor Core [Rate Link] - Really scary stuff, considering this is at least fifteen years old and no repairs has been made since.
