oh, BlankTom, please don't try to compare those two things... really, that's just silly.
(Or were you trying to be silly? If so, then you nailed it)

why is it that an old abandoned building in lima is a international treasure, while an old abandoned building in Detroit is an eyesore.

@Thonious~ Piss poor comparison.
It's not like they didn't know the freaking pyramid was there before starting trying to work in the area.

Selfish greed like this is EXACTLY WHY government regulations need to be in place and enforced.

People in and of themselves DO NOT work for the greater good.

@Gerry1of1

Other pictures from a wider angle show the site has been totally cleared.

The photos are skewed.
The 'developer' photo is zoomed in to a spot that is flat on the archeological photo. Not a valid news story.

Yelllow Journalism.

Unless it was a popular tourist destination I don't see what the fuss is about.

You'd better hope you don't find any ancient archeological artifacts in your garden or when your digging your new swimming pool. You don't really own your property if someone else wants it.

Having given this some brief thought whilst I finish my whisky, I bet watching them destroy it was like watching a game of tetris backwards.
