This was included in the newer radio series by Dirk Maggs. Series 3 4 and 5 available on CD and well worth it.

actually it is in the hitchhikers guide trilogie in four parts Arthur tells the story to that girl who's feet don't touch the ground.. fenchurch (had to look that up) the book is so long and thanks for all the fish. and he tells it as something that happend to him, waiting in a train station lunchroom/ i think it involved a packet of hobnobs. And after 5 minutes of typing i see that @razbitom bea tme to it, though Arthur tells is to Fenchurch :)

Douglas Adams was a genius. I have read most of his stuff, I think it's time to visit it again.

It's from Salmon of Doubt, not HGTTG.
Read the real version. SoD is a collection of short stories (mostly) and this is one of them and it's HILARIOUS in the full version.

Yeah, if you haven't read it, "The Salmon of Doubt" is great. It has an unfinished Dirk Gently novel taken from a few drafts he had written and there are a bunch short little essays and anecdotes like this cookie story.

LOL! That's great "whodat6484"! I love the line:
"The thing I like particularly about this story is the sensation that somewhere in England there has been wandering around for the last quarter-century a perfectly ordinary guy who's had the same exact story, only he doesn't have the punch line"

Well, this story is actually based on something that happened to Douglas Adams at a train station in 1976.

Here's the story from "The Salmon of Doubt"

Which book was this in? It's been so many years since I read them, but I don't recall this passage.
