Yes - but it's the wrong penises entering the wrong vaginas which brought the axes upon so many skulls - hmm, hence the thrust of his work?

Aren't we talking about science-fiction?

I think they were upset because vaginae weren't entering penises.
"WTF!!! I'll never read anything you produce!!! F*cking vampires having plain sex!! HOW SICK IS THAT?!!!"

Leave sex out of fiction! Give fickers something to do on their hot summer nights.

Axes entering the right skulls could also bring a whole lot of joy to this world.

@5cats: well, that would mean that there should be more seks in stories and movies. Everybody likes hope, after all? :D

I get your point, somewhat, though. And I do agree that S&M isn't violence, although it can seem that way.

@Chalket Yeah, I don't think it's as it's used to be. There's an increase in prudity in Europe as well.

@Zieveraar: Well thanks! I completely agree: "literary depictions" of sex AND/OR violence are NOT the "real thing"!
The point I try to make is:
Violence is everywhere! It's a constant threat in most people's lives! Sex on the other hand is something that is sought after! People WANT it to happen to them!

SO: One represents FEAR...
One represents HOPE...

Is that clear? No? Well... not to me either!

S&M (which I am VERY familiar with!) Is neither "sex" NOR "violence". It's... um... mutual! Which violence is NOT! And sex ought to be...
Honestly? Some (but NOT ALL!) of the nicest people are S&M "freaks"...

This is not about mixing genres or audience expectations, and it IS every bit as "deeply sociological as he thinks". What he says is quite true, the majority of Americans are simply uptight prudes when it comes to anything approaching sex or nudity ("Oh, my! We must protect our children from those evil boobs!"). Those self-same prudes will then gleefully watch someone graphically dismember and disembowel his victims in slow-motion without batting an eyelash.

Most of Europe has a much healthier view of the human body, treating it as something natural and beautiful instead of dirty and sinful (the way so many Americans do). Funny how rape and other sex crimes are much lower there too...

Explicit sex doesn't make for a more authentic narrative. In fact, in can be overkill. The smoldering sexuality of the classic old film noirs was so effective precisely because it wasn't in your face.

I have no problem with sex in movies, but it's too often inserted as a quick fix ... something that's just upposed to get the audience all riled up.

Sex scenes often stop the action in a film or novel cold. You might as well have a model walk out holding a big sign that reads, "Here's the Sex Scene!" Remember "The Name of the Rose?" That movie had to grind to a halt for five minutes of groping between the young novice monk and the peasant girl. The novice's first encounter with sex could have been handled without seeming as though it were just inserted into the movie because it needed a "sex scene."

In some films, more explicit sex makes a strong point. The big reveal in "Oldboy" was all the more powerful and disturbing because of the intimacy between the main characters which was shared with the audience.

@Keyh True, but that's already happening by placing age restrictions on a lot of things. Kids these days are already limited in watching movies, playing videogames,... based on age. Which I don't have a problem with. Although at times it can be quite absurd.

With this example, we're talking about adult literature. And I mean adult as in it's not Harry Potter, Martin doesn't write a song of ice and fire for kids or youths. It's an adult story. But I suppose 5Cats does have a point, fantasy never has much sex in it, maybe because to a lot of people, including writers, the target audience can be considered young? Does fantasy perhaps have an image problem? (as in: all meant for kids)

I think that it has something to do with controlling the youth.

If a youth is exposed to violence, you can use "morals" for lack of a better term, to control them into not acting out the violence against another person. "You would be hurting them, and that's not right."

If a youth is exposed to sex, how do you stop them from acting that out? There's nothing morally objectionable for 2 consenting people to have sex. You argument of control falls apart at that point.

As to why people would want to control that, there are many examples on how sex early in life CAN (not will, can) cause issues. Teen pregnancy, STD epidemics, etc. Not saying it's right, just saying that people want to control that stuff.

Just a theory though.

I made a similar point here not long ago.
This site will show people or animals dying or grievously injured but will not allow "curse" words such as f*ck. It's a stupid society.

@fivecats: true, mixing sex and violence is a pretty tough thing, although it's not uncommon in murder stories. I took Martin's comment here as more of a (indeed old) view that severe violence is accepted whilst plain old sex isn't. He's not referring to combining the two.

Also, SM scenes would be hard to do without some sort of violence and sex combined.

Straightforward guro ofcourse, that's indeed perhaps a step too far.

I agree that the fantasy series don't really have a lot of sex in it, for some reason.
But in asoiaf, there's no real excessive use of sex, or disturbing sex.

@WendyPants: I have many interests that might surprise you...

Ok, "catgirls" is a "gimmie"...

@Zeiveraar: His point is: (At least MY point is...) that Sex and Violence = Guro!
That is NOT GOOD!
Snuff films? Ero Guro? Guro? NO THANK YOU!

And I think the VAST majority of humanity would agree: NEVER mix sex and violence unless there's a greater message to be conveyed.

And a "greater message" requires a really greater writer to even HOPE to do it properly...

People can more easily "accept" fictional violence in their fantasy realm than fictional sex.
idk why.
Mixing the two is like adding nitro to glycerin... it's explosive & VERY dangerous!

@Jake What's your point?

@Paperduck The whole idea of sending letters to an author to inform them that someone isn't going to be reading their work, because of some illusionary expectations, is pretty absurd. How arrogant can you be?

And yes, sex should be in more genres outside of hentai. If done properly, it can add realism to a story. Saying that it has no place outside straight out porn is rather silly.

"You can have violence but no sex." That is one stale thought. Yeah, we get it. Film makers and writers have only been saying this for about the last 30 years.

@paperduck: ooo! Excellent point! I don't mind some "naughty sex" while reading hentai, but it has NO place in other genres.
Mixing genres is a delicate procedure! If done well? it's GREAT! Otherwise it's TERRIBLE.

@Nickle2: Nice! It would depend on your definition of "drating" I think... who is doing what to whom, eh?

(Yes I typed out "d r a t i n g" I've been here SO LONG!)
