Incidentally, to those getting annoyed at motorcyclists cutting to the front of the queue, answer me this: why are you getting annoyed at there being one fewer vehicle waiting in the queue in front of you?

A motorcycle at the front of the queue, setting off FAR faster than anything but the raciest of sports cars could ever hope to match, is going to be holding you up far less than the motorcycle sat patiently in the queue in front of you, making you one vehicle-length further back from the lights, making you just that little bit more likely to be the unlucky sod to reach the lights just as they turn red.

They're getting where they need to be faster...and they are not slowing you down in the process. Quite the opposite: they are helping you get there a little bit faster too!

Think! Then complain.

@5Cats

"YEs, but, didn't Motorcycle Boy do the exact same thing? He passed ALL those cars and then cut in front, yes?"

It's legal for a motorcyclist to straddle the line to go pass, or pass between, queued traffic, but only if the traffic is stationary.

When the traffic is moving, the motorcyclist is expected to treat any passing as an overtaking maneuver. This means you can pass moving traffic on your left, but not go between two lines of moving traffic (for instance, on a motorway).

Angilion, I lived in Hammersmith for a couple of years and worked about 3 miles away in Ealing. I had to drive one day and the journey into work wasn't too bad, but on the way home a bus had broken down in one of the lanes at Hammersmith roundabout and the traffic slowed to a crawl for miles because of people not letting those in the affected lane pull out - those 3 miles home took me 2 hours a mile.

Thanks for the info IAB-Europeans! It's semi-legal over there? Cool!

@Angilion: That does explain the reasons for left side VS right side driving, I'd never thought about the 'why of it' before! Thx!

Why anyone drives in London is beyond me. (I've been there a couple hundred times). Public transport is excellent.

I lived there for a while and I agree wholeheartedly. Driving in most of London is slower than public transport (and not infrequently slower than walking), tedious, irritating and expensive. And that's assuming that you can find somewhere to park.

I once sat on a bench in London having a drink and saw the same car come past 7 times. They were in the wrong lane and went round and round and round before someone let them out.

If anyone is going to drive anywhere near central London, I suggest they prepare by burning money and repeatedly slapping themselves in the face so they're used to the appropriate level of expense and annoyance.

The underground is ugly, but it's very efficient. Use that instead. Or get a taxi - there are thousands of them.

So clearly neither reason applies to most modern countries. It doesn't matter which side is used as long as it's consistent.

Neither side is objectively right or wrong in a modern context:

Left is the traditional side, used everywhere throughout history and almost certainly in prehistory too. It hugely predates any kind of vehicle. Most people are right handed. If they are on the left side of a road (path, track, etc), then they can draw their weapon and be immediately ready to use it against any attacker approaching them on the road (who would be to their right). Try pulling an imaginary dagger from a sheath on your left hip, using your right hand. If your enemy is to your right, you can attack directly in a single movement. If your enemy is on your left, you have to draw and turn...and get stabbed.

Right is better if you're right-handed and driving a large cart/carriage drawn by horses two abreast - you can more easily reach the left and right horses if you sit on the left and you can therefore more easily judge passing space with oncoming carts if they pass to your left.

What the hell is a 'Plonker'?

A mild generic insult implying a lack of intelligence and/or common sense. Made famous by a TV program in the 1980s. I don't know the etymology.

Anyway, as stated, line splitting by motorbikes or pushbikes is legal. You see it all the time. Technically you could do the motorbike for stopping at the light in front of the big white line, but that's splitting hairs (no pun intended). There's multiple offences by the berk in the silver car. He'd probably have got 6 points and a couple hundred quid fine for that, so he should consider himself lucky the cops only bollocked him.

I find the UK cops (if you're very co-operative) to be quite tolerant. I once got pulled for doing 65 in a 30 zone (I was young and foolish) and after apologising profusely (I thought it was a 50 and I Had just done a 26 hr shift), they gave me a 25 min bollocking and let me go without charge. Lucky.

@drawman61 Read the Highway code you idiot. Motercyclists are allowed to weve between traffic when it's queuing up. It's idiots like you who make it dangerous thinking you're going to be a "hero" and stop the bike. Just because you're stuck in traffic doesn't mean you stop everyone else....

@MrPeabody 'lane splitting' is legal for motorcycles in the UK at 'reasonable speed'. The car overtaking traffic in an oncoming lane is dangerous and definitely not legal. He obviously then continues his dangerous driving aimed at the motorcyclist

The chap in the car possibly DID make a mistake- but rather than apologise he then went out of his way to get the biker off the damn bike by cutting him up, slamming on the brakes and generally driving to annoy. Overtaking is perfectly legal- and on a bust street necessary- but you CANNOT undertake or cut someone up. Twat.

Although I don't understand the legality of it all, from reading the Youtube comments, it appears that the car driver was in the wrong and the biker was perfectly legal. I would think if the biker was in the wrong he would not have gone to the police, and the police would not have stopped the other driver. Also he presented his helmet cam video as evidence, which he would not have been able to edit to make himself look better.

Maybe someone from the UK who is familiar with the laws could shed some light on it?
