Sure beats the hell out of their old demolition method:

Maybe we will see this demolition style during our next "terrorist attack".

@Pandabee: Sighthill Towers Demolition

Those blocks are 20 stories? yes? And there's lots of room around them.

Tokyo Grand Prince Hotel is 40 stories, bigger all around and surrounded by other tall buildings.

Since the demolition preparations took 9 months? Overall it's not a whole lot faster, eh? (But it is cheaper, (and more fun!) to blow stuff up...)

You can demolish an enclosed building. Sighthill Tower block in Glasgow, had a railway track 10 metres one side and a primary school 10 metres the other side and it was brought down with a controlled explosion.

Like.
As much as I like Asplosions! (explosions) for demolition, being at ground level and having to put up with all that dust and stuff can be a bit tiresome.

VV It's a BIG building! There's at least 2 other buildings close to it. Plus there's all sorts of benefits to doing it this way:
Clean
Quiet
Recycle everything!

And it's probably not TOO much more expensive overall.

There's a lot of buildings in big cities that are "too big to demolish" and someday will have to be torn down...

I bet the Chinese could bring it down quicker. Just build a lighthouse on the Diaoyu Islands and wait for the bombers.

In seriousness, I am in a related industry and I would not want to be in, under or near that building when they demolish it that way.

I thought that a properly executed implosion would not typically affect surrounding buildings. This seems horribly inefficient and slow.

Clever and awesome, but explosions are way cooler.

Too efficient and no explosions.
