sorry "unable to detect standing waves from natural sound sources" You can detect them using sine wave but it's unnecessary.. Lo end tuning concentrates getting the same tones to be heard at the same level everywhere on that given space. 40Hz has 8m wavelength, that's several rows of people....

Standing waves is something i come across pretty often when tuning PA to for the room.. You can hear those patterns when walking all over the area, of course not in such detail. Tuning also concentrates on the low end so the waves are much farther apart, on the higher end the tones are much farther apart and more complex so humanbeing is unable to detect the waves anymore.

You can do this yourself. Google some tone generator and set it to somewhere around 120Hz. Walk around the room, you'll notice places where the wave is strongest and you move a little bit, the sound almost goes away. The higher you go, the closer these are. If you can produce 40Hz on your system, try that too and then 400Hz. Don't go very high as sinewaves pack a LOT of energy on almost infinitely narrow bandwidth, you can damage your ears using the same volume setting on your amp on 40Hz and then 10 000Hz..

It shows the locations of the plate where the variation in height of the plate is zero.

Try putting pepper on a level drum head and tapping it at different locations. Same thing happens, different patterns.

At the very least it can give you the terminology needed to conduct further searches.

I'd like to learn why these patterns express themselves the way they do. This was very cool. Anyone know where I can go to read more about this?

The best any artist can hope to do is mimic nature.
