The cicada nymphs burrow down until they find tree roots, then drink nutrient-rich fluid from them. This is one of the reasons the adult cicadas lay their eggs on trees, so that when the newborn nymphs fall to the ground, they're right above their primary food source and merely need to dig down.

What/how do they get nutrients to grow underground? A grain of rice goes in, a big bug with a hard shell emerges...

i used to say when i was six, "What's that noise?" My mom would say, "Those are Heat Bugs."
My mother was full of misconceptions. Most girls of the 50's were.
Her belief's in so many "Wive's Tales" led me on my quest of, "what is true." Like many of us.

Different species of cicada have different life cycles. The shortest emerge every 2 years, while the longest emerge every 17. Of note is that the life cycle of a cicada species is always a prime number. This ensures that multiple groups emerging at the same time is as rare as possible.

I feel as though I've been alive for 3 or 4 of these cicada emergences. I'm only 21 though. Can someone explain this to me? Are different groups of cicadas staggered at when they come out? Because it's definitely been less than 17 years since this last happened
