The one about kids being thin made me sad. We live right by several schools, and when school lets out, I know not to try to leave the neighborhood, as my car will be blocked by fat, waddling children and high schoolers, who look to be middle-aged. As they slowly drag by, their enormous, swollen bellies ballooning in front of them, I remember that when I was a kid, we usually had "the fat girl" and "the fat boy." One or two kids in the entire school were obese. That was it.

@randomxnp: "There is no difference to your body between sugar and corn syrup."

Says who? The corn syrup industry, of course! You can't seem to post anything here without being dead wrong about something, can you?

Princeton University: "Rats with access to high-fructose corn syrup gained significantly more weight than those with access to table sugar, even when their overall caloric intake was the same. In addition to causing significant weight gain in lab animals, long-term consumption of high-fructose corn syrup also led to abnormal increases in body fat, especially in the abdomen, and a rise in circulating blood fats called triglycerides."

There is no difference to your body between sugar and corn syrup. The reason it caused problems was the same reason for almost all problems in the world: government. Lobbyists and activist "scientists" persuaded government of one side of the debate of which was causing ill-health and weight rise out of fat and sugar, and the US government shut down the other side. It then subsidised corn syrup production, making it cheap to add to anything to make people want to eat it, even bread (as a Brit I cannot stand American bread, it is horribly sweet).

So as usual a libertarian attitude to government would have massively reduced the problem.

As I always say, if government is the answer then it must have been a bloody stupid question.

Thanks for the flashback; God, they were delicious.

Also my gran used to wrap a spoonful of sugar in a lettuce leaf! Miracle that I kept my teeth.

"After play rehearsal, she'll Watusi with the gang"

I think that's code for pornography...

...which is a great way to burn sugar calories.

I had a friend who's mother would pack him a sugar sandwich each day for lunch. Two pieces of bread, butter and sugar!

I can't remember when sugar came off ration, but late enough that when I was a child it was still a luxury, so it never featured much in my life. But oddly my partner still believes that sugar is good for you- I had a hell of a time when the children were small stopping him and his parent feeding them sweets all the time. I rarely have sugar- I never add it to food, yet he over sweetens everything- will even eat it straight from the bowl.

It's not the cake that makes you fat. It's the glass of milk you drink with it.

@SarahofBorg--or perhaps an increasingly sedentary lifestyle. There were fewer screens to be glued to back then.

Pure sugar isn't all THAT bad (granted, not nearly as good as these adds proclaim). But it is Cornsyrup that is the real culprit.

I really don't understand why people who used to think lard was a condiment, pure cream was something you drink straight, and kids could eat as much candy as they could get their hands on were nowhere near as fat as we are now. I blame corn syrup being added to goddamn everything, and artificial sweeteners completely screwing our sugar metabolism.

Candy for dieting? Sure thing! AYDS candies. {pronounced just like the disease}. They were diet candies supposed to reduce appetite. But the disease came along in the 80s and no one wanted to gorge on AIDS anymore.

Also there were antacids you don't see on the shelf anymore.
