@lauriloo: I hope you get them from a shelter or the ASPCA, eh? Or an actual "cattery" if you've got $$ for a certain breed. NOT a "pet supermarket" please!
Crapping in the toilet is very hard to teach, and cats are "funny" in that they'll use the inside (correct) way 3/4 of the time and the outside (wrong!) way the other 1/4...
Some can, some simply cannot.
Furniture shredding is countered by:
-give them a nice scratching post!
-let them scratch an old piece of furniture!
(This worked well for me for a decade, they still "test the waters" though, you must remain vigilant! lolz!)
-keep their claws trimmed!
Good luck! Kitties can be wonderful, but it's not "guaranteed".

All of these cat videos may have succeeded in making me finally want to get a pair of cats. Been holding off because I travel so much but my sister lives nearby and said she would stop in and check in them while I'm gone if I get some. Really hoping I can train them to use the toilet and not tear apart my furniture.

i'd love to add a cat to the ever-growing zoo-like atmosphere here, especially one with a little pushed-in face (how adorable!). but the whole crapping-in-a-dishpan thing grosses me out.

Very funny ... 'I want two rubs exactly. A third rub and I will bite...' yup that's a cat all right! :)

"...the water dish continues to vex me..."
Our late cat had a silver metal water bowl and could never tell where where the water surface was. She'd dab at it with her paw, causing ripples, in order to drink without sticking her nose in the wet!
