Doctors get more than what some statistics say. A large part of them work part time in communal, just enough to get the salary and then the rest of their time is spent on private clinics.

Medicin is a good point to bring up, Finnish system specifically demands that the cheapest medicine available is recommended so the price gap between generic and brand name drugs stays low. Only the drugs that are enjoying their patent protection are high priced. There were a lot of education (tv programs, press, not done by goverment but free media, you know the ad-showing kind..it was a good story..) to get rid of the brand vs generic placebo effect (brand names work better even if the pill is the same..)

System takes care of you from cradle to grave, it's non-intrusive, mainly it's there if you want it. Only when a person is committed as unfit to take care of himself you are really nannied.

Krogholt this is sexactly what is ay to people that tell me in USA taxes are lower than here in Italy. Can be true, but you also heve to see what are the services your taxes are used for. When someone tell me in USA taxes are lower i allways say "yes, but you must add the expenses for healt insurances and istruction to be fair".

Ahhh, we're talking post-taxes... Well, then you'd have to factor in all the things that the taxes pay for in Finland, but that you have to pay extra in the US, e.g. healthcare / health-insurance, college/university education, etc... But sure, the 42 % tax in Finland vs. the 23 % tax in the US does take a heavy toll.

Cost of living is very high, amongst the highest in the world. And still less poverty and less hungry people (there's always some, nothing is perfect, Finland is still far away from it). Everybody pays taxes, you lose 20% from your unemployment check due taxes (i'm "tax free" as i'm a student, yipee, any paying work i do are taxed of course, but not my student allowances, same as some pensioners)...I get around 900-1000€ per month and i have more than 300 left for food and personal expenses after utility bills are paid.. rent (35000 people town, close to centre, good condition 40m2) is 550€, electricity ~40€ per month, internet 20€ etc. to get some idea. Half is paid by student allowance and the rest by welfare. Bread is around 2-3€, milk is >1€, meat >10€/kg so food ain't cheap, a BicMac meal (i think) is somewhere around 8€, n

Btw, the 74,000 is for a specialist. A general practioner makes 68,000, so "only" 5,667 per month, but still quite a lot more than 3,000

auburnjunky: I have no idea where you came up with that random salary for Finnish doctors, but according to a real source (NY Times, 2009), they make 74,000 US$ per year, which equals 6,167$ per month. That the statement about teachers making as much is bogus is a different story.

Teachers in Finland don't get doctors salary. They do have good salary, principals gets more than a fresh new doctor. Professors are in the same bracket as doctors and lawyers. Most publicly paid professions get salary increase the more time they've been employed but average salaries are comparable to other higher education professions. So regular "high-school" teacher has better pay than the equivalent US teacher (measured against the average income or what ever you want to use as a base line for each country in question. And our lawyers aren't getting such a big checks either, or doctors, compared to general population, it's called equality.

@piperfawn: Actually I think cost of living in Finland is more, but I could be wrong. Funny thing that isn't gettin the mention though is how their students are testing above-average in spite of the lack of money, so something else they are doing that we aren't is working.

"Now what are Finish doctors payed"

(converted to US dollars for ease)

Doctors make about $3,177 a month in Finland, compared to about $8,189 in the USA.

Teachers in the USA make about $4,930 per month on average, not including benefits. Let that settle for a moment.

i have heard explanations as to why Iceland is not actually recovering, and why the fact that they are recovering should not mean the same strategy would work for the rest of the world. The only problem with THAT is that the source helped to get us into this mess in the first place. Anyway- why NOT make those who did wrong pay...

Now what are Finish doctors payed cause if we payed US teacher doctor salary all our money would go to taxes and we probably still couldn't afford it!
