auburnjunky: She mumbles so much I'll take your word for it!
No, I think you heard right. 14M is still astonishingly smooth on a world scale, where the real relief is almost 20,000M.

Still not perfect tho. It either is, or it isn't. It's not, so what's the point... er <insert perfect sphere is pointless comment here>

Canoas: It was not put clearly, but yes, what she was saying was that if the metal sphere was enlarged to Earth size, the greatest relief would be 40mm. I should have wondered that a tech would say something as bizarre as how I heard the first two times. That 40mm precision is phenomenal.
Thanks for clearing that up.
PS: much of the world still can't use a calculator!

"The is the opposite of what I was on about the other day, with the allegation a bowling ball was rougher than the Earth. Now this woman says there'd be 40 mm (1 3/5") of relief on this metal ball. Nah-ah. That's WAY to much. Even 14 is too big. Can't anybody use a calculator?"

What the hell are you talking about? The earth is 12742000 meters in diameter, so a 14 meter difference is about 0.0001%. Since this sphere is less than 100 mm in diameter then it's diameter variation is less than 100 nanometres. How is that too much? Do you realise how perfect that is? That's 100 times smaller than your red blood cells.

This is one of the best channels on youtube. I don't get around the internet very much, most of my time is spent here on IAB and some on youtube. Veritasium, Vsauce 1,2,and 3, SmarterEveryDay, Minute Physics, Numberphile, and PeriodicVideos are all great youtube channels for nerdy science stuff.
