i don't see any racism here. just a councilwoman who looks too far into things. the children hadn't received "trainging" on this subject? THEY DON'T NEED TRAINING SINCE CHILDREN ARE TAUGHT RACISM. YOU AREN'T BORN RACIST. YOU'RE BORN NOT GIVING A F*CK. THE PERSON WHO NEEDS TRAINING IS THE COUNCILWOMAN. THEY'RE CHILDREN. HOLY F*CKING SH*T. GOD DAMN.

I thought the problem was the way the girl phrased it. She said the P word, Person.

Those poor kids. You can just hear it the minute she asks them about it that they're just stunned, they had no preconceived notion of any negative connotations. It was going from the darkness into the light of knowledge, it's a metaphor not a literal statement. It has nothing to do with race, they are supposed to be universal figures.

I wish somebody had just said "It has to do with light, not skin colour. There is no such thing as gold people"

SmagBoy1-"if you're in the majority, you don't get to define racism"

And if you're in a minority, you don't get to define racism.

The definition of Racism is:
Noun
1.The belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, esp. so as to distinguish it as...
2.Prejudice or discrimination directed against someone of a different race based on such a belief.

THAT is the definition.

This 'lady', is defining 'racism' as she see fit, as it fits her agenda.

If there had not been a black figure, she would have been offended.
If there were many black figures, she would have been offended.
Had there been 'X', or 'Y', or NOT had been 'X' or 'Y', she would have been offended.

The problem is not with the quilt, it's with the idiot in the councilperson's chair.

I think people who find racism in things like this are racist.

Shame on you.
There is enough blatant racism that you don't have to search it out in places where it doesn't exist.

::facepalm::
Some people seem to be able to find offense in the simplest and most innocent of things.

He's 14 Feet Tall! Oops, my bad!

I saw him myself, before the repairs, he was in rough shape. Nearly 100 years of standing on one foot will do that to a guy...

@Cartunze: "As a large gold person"
And @edana42 too:

Winnipeg's "Golden Boy" is on top of our Parliament Building!

A few years ago they took him down and repaired him. We got to see him up close and personal! Yes, he's 11 feet tall and buck naked...
He was a gift from France Merci!

SmagBoy1, what they don't get is that they don't have the freedom to NOT be offended. Somewhere along the line, people think that is a freedom they have. PURSUIT of happiness, not happiness.

Listen, I'm not trying to be a liberal tree hugger here, but, if you're in the majority, you don't get to define racism and you don't get to define what's racially offensive to minorities. That's the exact opposite of how that works. Did this woman handle this situation badly? Yes. Supremely badly! But, does that make her concern invalid? Unless we're in the minority, it's not for us to judge. We're not qualified.

As a large gold person, I take offense that some of these kids might think I was once a small black person.

I was thinking that it was going to be the big black dot in the lower left corner that was going to be controversial but my ears picked up as soon as she said "This is a small black person". Sometimes a small black person is just a small black person, or as Sigmund Freud said "Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar". The councilwoman is reading too much into the symbolism.

I'm not an expert on US politics, but I don't think a city councillor is the same as a Congresswoman. I've been a district councillor in the UK and if that's anything like the same it's not big politics. Lends itself to big egos, though.

" in a city that's 45 percent African-American"

And yet, none of those "top students" are black. THAT's the issue she should be looking into. Why has her community failed to produce better students. Instead she'll call the 'achievers' racist.

I would've retorted with, "Oh, so you think blacks are incapable of learning then?"

It seems this councilwoman and markust are in the same boat: perceiving something that simply ISN'T there.

Sometimes I wish everyone who cried racism for something so trivial would be given a good enema and enough Xanax to calm down an elephant.
