how arogant thinking these children are stupid because they are black, poor and from africa. Here's why these kids are so clever. They eat decent food. No junk, no additives, no preservatives, no GMO, no artificail colours, flavours etc. They are not drinking flouride, they are most likely(and hopefully, (unless that gates prick has got his filthy hands on them), unvaccinated. their brains are good and pure. Also, they have not been f ucking brainwashed by the education system, and have the benefit of growing, in their optimal period of development, with their parents in a natural environment where they explore, learn and reach best possible cognitive levels. We should be jelous of these little buggers, they are the ones that have it good. (apart from all the starvation stuff and the genocidal governemt stuff) This does not surprise me at all, infact, it delights me :)

I am sorry- I know- I was boss eyed from study last night, what I meant was ' children ( who just so happen to live in Africa) prove far smarter than the researchers had bargained for...

@madduck, yeah that was condescending title. It jokingly made me think of this:

African Child

Not surprising. I mean look at these kids. They're wearing rags and sitting around in the dirt. Give them a singular piece of technology and of course they are going to learn everything they possible can about it. Young minds are hungry. What's the alternative? Sit around in the dirt and *not* play with the laptop?

I did a job in Addis Ababa in the 80's. The local engineers allocated to help me were very able and intelligent. I got the impression that a few of them, given the chance, would go on to learn far more than I, and be very successful in the world. All they lacked was the means and money.

If you read the link at the bottom the software installed is the key. As for racist- no not really- African kids are obviously as smart and able as any other kids- but even allowing for very interesting software this show astounding acuity. Their learning environment is completely different to kids in the west, the idea was to enable them to teach themselves- no racism implied at all- but I doubt anyone was expecting this. If you did this with a group of kids in the west I expect quite different results- but what the differences would be I don't know. It is interesting because of what it could teach us about learning, about how kids develop skill, a very large number of studies are western centric, not deliberately, but because researchers use kids they have access to. I have the link to that somewhere too.. but culture and environment have far reaching affects, and things like this have quite a lot more interest than just clever kids.

Proof our education system is way over rated.

This whole report sounds a bit over-hyped and dubious. It may be a great program, giving young Africans laptops, but how do you learn hacking when you've never seen printed words, let alone know what they mean? Methinks exaggeration is afoot.

That is a horribly rascist sounding title

Who ever said they were dumb? They might be insanely poor and malnourished, but educate anyone and they'll live a better life, do it in the aggregate and education improves the wellbeing of not only the educated but the society in which they live. More money should be spent.

That is the most awesome project! Give kids the tools directly and they will continue to be amazing.

I realize it wasn't intentional, but that is some unfortunate wording on the title.

That aside--Damn! I thought it was impressive that I taught myself to read at age ~3. Talk about some ambition and ingenuity!

Incredible. Seriously, this is truly effing incredible!

And, as for calculus, maybe not the first day, but I'd bet there are plenty of kids there (probably in equal proportions as anywhere) who can learn and master calculus and other mathematics. Sounds like they're well on their way!

Now *this* story had me chopping onions. Dang!

Who didn't think they were smart?

Something similar was tried in the slums of Mumbai. A computer was placed there with no instructions, and the kids taught themselves to use it and started using it to teach themselves.

I don't think anyone would think they are dumb...

Sure, they probably can't do calculus very well, but put a suburban white boy in Africa, and I doubt he would survive long.

Judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, and all that jazz.

"Smarter than people thought" Really? Like that isn't insulting at all.
