This is how it happens.

It explains some of them, maybe all of them.

@jendrian: Nope! That video doesn't show them moving. It even says so.

@FakeBacon: It's a rater unique place: arid desert, windy, cold at night. Thank heaven it's ISOLATED or "souvenir hunters" would have stripped it long ago! That would be tragic.

I like the wind makes ice & rocks the stone theory. It's the one that answers the most questions.

Moving ice pushing the rocks would also push the sand and erase the tracks...

@TheGuySmiley: They have. This is no mystery.

Moving Rocks of Death Valley

It's just water that turns into ice over night dragging the rocks as the wind moves it. The mud surface is just so that some of those rocks get dislodged and move with the water while others don't.

If I had to guess, seismic vibration, even as minute as it may be, combined with the slippery sand make a way for the rocks to move.I also think wind may help to push everything along.

The rocks are drawn towards the polarity of the hull of an alien buried under the surface full of warlike creatures ready to enslave us when they get the signal.

Duh.

if there's no videos why doesn't someone set up a camera and start filming?

Doubt it's ice. How come the phenomenon is so localized. Ice and water and wind are pretty common occurrence, Why doesn't this happen more frequently in other places?

I think it's more magnetic in nature.

It's not mystery and the jury is not still out on this one. Do some drating research.

I read the composite theory I mean.

Freezing water can move a rock weighing several tons! Not MUCH of course, but it moves...

@markust: Yeah, I think it's something like that.

On cold nights the humidity (what little there is) is caught on the leeward side of the rocks, making the ground freeze and rise up.
When it thaws it sinks and "rocks" the rock forwards just a little bit.
This could happen repeatedly during a night, or only a few times over a year.
It's similar to how they now think the Easter Island Heads were moved.

It explains:
>why they change directions
>why no one's filmed it
>why it takes so long
>why they sometimes don't move for years
>why stones both big and small seem to move at the same speed
>why some stones "move" while others do not.

It's probably unique to that location, but may happen less frequently elsewhere too.

I totally thought it up! Or not, it's a composite of 2 other theories I read once...

I didn't know the jury was still out on this. I read something in the mid nineties that the ground freezes at night and the wind pushes the rocks along the ice.

Link: Sailing Stones: Cali's Creepy Mystery [Pic+] [Rate Link] - Rocks that move on their own in Death Valley? Yep, although the jury's still out as how this weird phenomenon happens.
