You people are missing something obvious:
Common social attitude was different. Between then and now, the definition of rape changed. The term 'date rape' was not yet common.

Why am I not surprised to learn that McGovern1981 likes a little S&M? Once a sicko, always a sicko.

...once he's made up his you're screwed.

Has @SPrinkZ fallen prey to the "pun disease"?

NOOO! It's spreading like wildfire!!!

I think @cobrakiller has it right: they were trying to avoid using the "rape" word, to work around the "automatic response" that it invokes.

Cobrakiller, the data is suggesting about 1 out of 8 to half of people polled (including females) are okay with what they understood they were being asked. Unless the conversion from the scale to yes/no method is really flawed, those numbers don't make sense for rape. Not in 2013 or 1978. 18% of females think some guy can rape her if she's had sex with others? That's ridiculous.

@swaywithme yes, I'd like to know if each responder knew they were being asked about the former and not the latter.

They say rape is the #1 fantasy for women, but I didn't know it was that popular.

Paperduck, it says specifically "Physically forces her to have sex". That seems pretty clear to me. If it is consensual, then there will be no "forcing" her to have sex.

I don't see how this can be confused with using physical force during consensual sex. Anybody who has trouble differentiating between those two ideas may need to take a closer look at their passed "consensual" encounters.

Good example of how the first people needing to be convinced of women's rights were women themselves.

There is a difference between physically forcing someone to have sex and using physical force while having consensual sex. Just sayiinnnn

Cobrakiller you've never held a girl down and exerted any kind of force? Not even toward the end? Or "when she gets you excited?" Did the responders understand what was meant by the researchers? Judging by the answers, even from females (because they can enjoy a little engagement too as long as it's consensual), I bet they didn't. The key component missing here is consent. You can have holding and forcing + consent and it's not rape. You can have neither holding down nor forcing without consent and that IS rape. See the difference?

Yes, aside from the validity of the scoring. Trying to gauge people's thoughts on rape without using that word because it illicits a certain response is tricky, but not being clear what your talking about exactly is tricky too.

Also poo I sound kind of psycho now, don't I? Some females here to the rescue please...

Paperduck, I don't know about you, but holding down someone and physically forcing them to have sex is my top definition of rape. I don't think there is any way that the question could be taken in any other way.

I could see her wording it like this though to get people's true thoughts. "rape" happens to be one of those words that illicits a certain response of "that's bad" in most people. This way you get an accurate response of a certain action while staying away from key words that illicit an automatic response.

Whether or not the data is 100% accurate and unslanted is a completely different argument.

This is a terrible poll question. The person answering can interpret the question entirely differently than the researchers. Hold her down despite her pleas for you to stop? Or is this a couple wanting to have sex and he's holding her down at some point (it's consensual)? How did the responder understand the question?

My guess is people would answer very differently if the question was "is it all right if a male rapes a female if...."

"Wait just a freaking second, how is this a poll published from 1979, with an internet tag at the bottom?"
You don't suppose someone that currently has a website referred to info from the past, do you?

@chalket: That is an EXCELLENT link! It explains everything clearly and quickly!

It just goes to show how "polls" can be skewed to make them say whatever you want them to...

This was printed in a book in 2003 showing the data from the 1978 poll thus the website. "In 1978, 432 adolescents, ages 14-18, were interviewed in the Los Angeles area. The three major ethnic groups were equally represented, as were males and females. Attitudes toward the opposite sex, sexuality, sex roles, rape, power, and violence were measured along with behavioral expectations, perceptions, norms about dating, and sex differences in the acquisition of attitudes and expectations."

Yes because I am sure a .org web address would have been printed on an exam from 1979 that totally makes sense.
