@WhoDat: EVERYONE forgets that is about abortion, everyone.

"22. "When men strive together, and hurt a woman with child, so that there is a miscarriage, and yet no harm follows, the one who hurt her shall be fined, according as the woman's husband shall lay upon him;"

EDIT: I'd better include the next few lines too:

"23. If any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24. eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25. burn for burn, wound for wound, stripe for stripe."

If you knowingly keep a dangerous animal? You take FULL responsibility for what it does.

" 29. But if the ox has been accustomed to gore in the past, and its owner has been warned but has not kept it in, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death."

The strangest thing: That led to an awful lot of stories about people being convicted of sorcery due to confession.
I'm going to go out on a limb a say "the actual practice of magic" was probably not why MOST of them were arrested.

An eye for an eye is not accpetable?
Hitting your child with a belt is not acceptable?
Death punishment is acceptable?

WHO ARE WE TO DECIDE?

Punishment is never a black or white decision:
Hold your other cheek may not be the correct reaction.
Kill the offender may not be the correct reaction.

How about trying to make the punishment less severe than the deed?

Examples: Life time prison for one person killed?
Death sentence for multiple killer?

Don't send an atomic bomb back when your country is hit by one?
Stop the war when you are about to kill more people than your opponent killed in your country?

Comments welcome.

My favorite history teacher said to me "An eye for an eye does not leave the whole world blind. It leaves the whole world with low depth perception." Funny guy.

If we could allow an eye for an eye punishments in the US, the crime rate would go way down in a very short time.

What a wonderful and inspiring example of diversity.

Remember, all cultures are equally deserving of respect.

Exodus 21:22-25

If people are fighting and hit a pregnant woman and she gives birth prematurely but there is no serious injury, the offender must be fined whatever the woman's husband demands and the court allows. But if there is serious injury, you are to take life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, burn for burn, wound for wound, bruise for bruise.

"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind" - Ghandi

Matthew 5:38-39 Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth:
But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.

I'd like to see this law here for some, like that guy from a few days ago who killed the infant trying to rape her. Maybe put him in a cage on all fours with a donkey in heat.

just dont feck up in the bad lands"

@ferdyfred - Agreed! After seeing a few episodes of Locked Up Abroad I make sure I'm on my best behavior when visiting other countries.

Is it f*cked up? Yes, and people can complain all they want but in the end they'll just do whatever the f*ck they want. All these civil rights activists go apesh*t when they see a story like this and say, "Why are you just sitting there and letting it happen? Get of your a$$es and do something!" Then when you step in to do something they say, "How dare you go into another country and tell them how to run it?"

I say, "F*ck this, leave me alone, I'm staying out of this one..."

@LordJim: Britian, USA and Canada (I'm ashamed to say) Responded to Nazi Kristallnacht by... refusing to allow Jews to immigrate, never mind "refugee status"!

The world is a nasty-bad place! Be thankful you're sitting at home, safe in front of your computer with idle time to visit IAB...

Hang on, I don't want to Godwin here but by that logic as Hitler was legitimate head of state and as long as he limited his actions to German nationals then all we could do was express disapproval?

Ok, a quick review of history has shown that actually, yeah I'm wrong and that's how it works. China got an olympics, we fawn over bloated princes, we celebrate basrards as long as they are our bastards; when it is expedient we will get all shocked and horrified at what our client despots have been up to and happily throw them under the bus but in the meantime...

Oh, damn. I'd been having such a nice day and now I've depressed myself.

Except he was 14 when he did this and he's spent ten years in prison already. And if he could come up with the cash everything would be sweet.

You seriously think this is ok?

@LordJim: Oh yes, we can and must point out that it's cruel and barbaric! But that's about ALL we can or should do.

We punish them for how they enforce laws within their own Sovereign Nation? On their own citizens? They cut the oil off... guess who backs down first?

(Sovereign is my "word of the week" lolz!)

I have to admit, I can easily imagine that, if I had been raised in a culture that includes this 'eye-for-an-eye' punishment, that would deter me from even thinking about doing something illegal.

Gerry,

Guns and oil. And money, and a cosy relationship with other money.

5Cats,

In the case of KSA it's not telling them how to run their 'justice' system, it's more pointing out that their system makes them abhorent to the rest of us.

Just a thought, but what if the west put down strict sanctions against our more unpleasant allies such as KSA. But sanctions that only hit the rich. Yes, we will buy your oil and sell you weapons for defence. We sell you food, medicine, civil engineering stuff, all that. But you don't get to visit, you don't get to swan around London or New York; one does business with the hangman but one doesn't have him to dinner.

Put sanctions on fancy cars and bling. Make it clear that we are associates, not friends. This is not a long term relationship, it's a sleezy shack-up.

Seems to me that many countries (including our own) have some pretty messed up systems of punishment for criminals. We warehouse people, often for non-violent, first time offenses, with pretty much no hope after they get out.

I would measure a "good" punishment as one that reduces crime. So, seems to me it'd be worthwhile seeing what first world countries have very low crime and very low recidivism. *That's* how I'd define good punishment.

But, as several have said, I don't run their country, and don't vote there. So, there it is.

Hey, it's all part of their culture. You inclusive types need to embrace and honor this.

Me? I think they're just a bunch of primitives with guns.
