@CodeJockey: Oh it's true! Femen ARE crazy! But mostly they do crazy stuff to get media attention. I think...

What makes them "brave" in my opinion is that they go after dangerous targets: The Russian Government, Muslim Nations, not "soft, easy & politically correct" things like "Wall Street" or "Cruise Missiles"...

"...after she marched to the top of a hill overlooking Kieve, stripped down to nothing but a pair of red denim shorts and work boots and proceeded to chop down a 13ft cross with a chainsaw..."
Damn, that's hot!! I wonder if she's single...

Amina makes more sense, that happened >>IN<< Tunisia and I can even buy into someone's protesting an embassy but, these folks were burning flags on/near a mosque in Paris. That part is not cool.

This Is The Story Behind The Protests Which makes for interesting reading.

@CodeJockey: It's a protest aimed at the nation of Tunisia, which has and enforces Sharia Law. Many protests were outside of Tunisian Consulates (as well as some Mosques).

"-"F*ck your morality" Is one of the things Amina wrote on her chest and posted, it was in English (while the others were in Arabic).

Just a little "heads up" to answer your questions.

I wish that original woman wrote the message on her ass and took pictures bent over.

A couple of years ago, some women from out of state went to Portland Maine and paraded topless down Congress street to protest the right for women to be able to not wear a shirt like men do.
What was hilarious about the situation was, women going topless in Maine is not illegal.
They bared their boobages in protest of a law that does not exist.

"Would a protest for women's rights make it to IAB, for example, if the women weren't topless? I rest my case."
Yes, they already have especially when something ironic occurs.
You weren't paying attention.

Well, looking at their issue, I'm all for a religious protest but, I take exception to two things there:
-Why burn a flag on/near someone's church property? Anyone else would be charged with a hate-crime.
-"F*ck your morality" seems to be deliberately hurtful. I don't think that will do the best job of encourage women to let go their oppressors if any other part changes their opinion on weather or not they are oppressed.

To me, the sum of the actions depicted say: "Your culture isn't welcome here."
It should be saying: "I disagree with your bullsh*t assertion that earthquakes are caused by the promiscuity of women."

They protest naked because they're saying that people don't listen to women, they just want to look at them. So they turned it around and used it to their advantage. They "took back" their own sexuality and nudity for their own reasons and on their own terms. I've heard interviews with them and they're smart and educated women, who truly believe in the causes the support. They've started in Ukraine but now have chapters all over the world. Anyway, they're not the first - Peta has used naked protest for years. Sometimes you just have to really go out there, no one listens to anyone who wants to politely present their side of the story.

...sometimes I hate men. Let's totally miss the point because boobs. Dahurhurhur. -sigh-

Yeah because flashing your boobs makes everyone stop and think "Wow we have been totally wrong about this valid point you are making."

I think I will give my dog steak the next time she pees on the carpet, that will make her understand that she shouldn't pee in the house.

Nice link @chalket! Lenny Bruce was a genius, he was really "cutting edge".

Just on a side note: The reference to JFK in this? JFK is often credited for ending the custom of "hat wearing" in the USA. He just refused to wear one (idk why) and after he became PotUS? It was OK to NOT wear a hat all the time.
So it's possible JFK could have "de-stigmatized" that word... but I doubt it.

That was a brave gesture
Much respect to those women
It was a protest about women like Whodat says
who are treated like second class citizens
and have to be obedient to all men
and are frequently treated basically like animals
I have seen such treatment, living in the west mids of England
there is a high number of Muslims living here

Gerry, do you feel sexualized by going shirtless in public? Then why should women? It's an outmoded, smallbrained-knuckledragger mentality to think that women's breasts must be hidden away lest some man see them and lose control. You know some men have large breasts, some women have flat chests... why is it that only women have to hide themselves? Why don't men have to? The ONLY reason they have this power is the continued suppression.

I think these women are baring their chests to show that there is no reason they shouldn't be able to! If everyone did it, everyone would stop caring. It's kinda like thisLenny Bruce bit (as performed by Dustin Hoffman).

Protesting never accomplished anything! Until right now, when it accomplished a boner.

Here's The Story which I just found.
This woman in Tunisia posted naked pics of herself on FaceBook, with political messages written on her chest. The link has a "black lined" image which is only mildly nsfw...

So her family committed her to a mental institution, against her will! And she's facing charges under Sharia Law which could include 80 lashes or even DEATH!

Thus the Femen's protest outside Tunisian Embassies and Mosques across Europe. Good for them!

The "naked parts" is what gets them free media attention! Use what your Mama gave you!

"I get the protest but just how is showing off your fun bags helping?"

It has to do with the oppression of women. Like in Muslim countries where if a woman shows a little bit of ankle they call her a whore and stone her to death.

@DromEd, I'm pretty sure that going topless encourages the women who are immersed in yet suffering personal dissonance with strict Islamic law hope that they can one day assert themselves as the rightful owners of their bodies without fear of brutal capital punishment. I think that the nudity is intended to receive attention, although not attention of a sexual sort obviously. Rather, I believe that it is a shining example of nuditas virtualis conveying the power in metaphor of raw naked outrage, determination and strength.
