Well you already give athletes a free ride for playing a game...

No, they get a "free ride" for making $millions for their schools. Sports are a HUGE money maker for colleges and universities, or they were till the liberals forced them to spend the same amount of money on women's sports, which is mostly wasted.

Really, 'murica? Yet another anti-intellectual drive?

One big fat reason against this is that no basic research will get done because no theoretical science study programs will recieve any kind of funding.

let's be honest here, what do we think college/university is really about? is to get an education in a field that you want to pursue? or to study something you are interested in or like doing? or, and this is going to anger some people, is it a tool for indoctrinating young, impressionable teens into left-wing ideology? A little of each i think.
my opinion is that publicly funded college/uni should be about training or education for a career. not for a hobby. for example, i know a girl who did a degree in playing a musical instrument... she had to do a further year to increase her employability in flute playing, now she is considering doing another year to become a music teacher. she should have just done a degree in musical education. 2 years of wasted money and time. but she has very left-wing opinions and that is the only result that matters, right?

The problem of unemployable graduates with worthless degrees started when the government took over the student loan business. Can you imagine a banker in his right mind loaning someone $200K to get a degree in Ethnic Studies or Feminist Literature?

BTW, McDonald's is advertising to hire college grads as cashiers. What the hell else are you qualified to do with a degree in 12th Century Chinese Poetry?

Once again, liberals ruin everything they touch.

This will just turn colleges into a limited vocational school. Students need a more holistic education that will help them grow.

Degrees in History of Fine Art, Anthropology, Italian Literature, etc. are good for one thing:

They make space for productive members of society - Asians, Jews, Indians, etc. on the courses that have actual value. It's all about culturally appropriate wealth distribution.

I am all for cutting funding to programs that don't have a job upon graduation. It is pointless to study things that are of no use to anyone. Personal gain is great, but don't expect the working class taxes to pay for it.

Well I dont really get a vote here but seems pretty stupid to condemn all the students of an institution based on the amount of 'personal interest' courses taken. Making the education system an elitist ladder makes a mockery of 'The American Dream'. (or is it the American way?')

This is a stupid idea, where even education becomes a capitalist tool. I can just imagine all the majors and subjects that go away, and all the new "majors" that would be created.

School is for learning.

Excellent point MeGrendel.

A guy I work with has a son who is a little over a year out of engineering school. He just got a job offer for 80k/year. He already has a good job and was not even looking for a new one.

Study something useful people!

Gerry1of1-"Isn't the purpose of college to educate you for a career?"

It is the purpose of college to educate you in the field you have chosen.

It is your responsibility to choose a field that:
A) You want to work in &
B) You think you can get a job in.

If you want to major in Latin, and are willing to pay for it, it's the college's job to present you with the information you paid for.

It is NOT the college's responsibility to find you a job that involves Latin. No one speaks it anymore, plus we already know every single word in Latin that exists so there’s no new Latin that’s hot off the presses that needs immediate translating.

Doesn't sound too bad, could alleviate the problems of the current education bubble we're going through.

I was running a kitchen as chef at 22. I didn't need to go to college. You learn the ropes and let your work speak for itself.
Who needs that kind of debt so early on?

At least he's trying to look at things in a different way. Why should government money (you know THE PEOPLE'S money) pay for courses that have no to little real world direct correlation to skills that will land a job? (horrible sentence but you get the point)

Isn't the purpose of college to educate you for a career? Does majoring in Angry Women's Studies get you a good paying job?
