Terrified of "Sharia Law" but enacting a state religion that would systematically enact restrictions on individual freedoms is fine? Why is this okay?

Per Wiki, starting with Gitlow v. New York (1925), the Supreme Court has applied the First Amendment to each state. This was done through the Due Process Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

I'll go along with that. It's a short step from the "Official Religion" to laws based on the Official Religion. In which case slavery would be legal again.

I'm a Christian and this still scares me... I don't want government telling people what to believe even if it happens to be what I believe.

Technically they are right, the Constitution applies the first amendment to Congress. BUT courts have since tied it to the States as well. There's no way this would fly.

@jackbluessel - You're joking, right?

Christian Atrocities link 1 (dating back to 315 AD to present time)

Christian Atrocities Link 2 (similar to Link 1 but a bit more detailed)

Christian Terrorism (acts by groups or individuals who claim Christian motivation for their actions)

I could keep going but that should be sufficient.

Amazing, isn't it, that Christian fundamentalists consider Muslim fundamentalists to be backward? Damn, these folks are a$$holes!

@patchouly

But... but... what about Mormons? The worst thing the Mormons have done in the name of their church is not let African Americans have the priesthood... and they have since changed their views. Got any examples of anything else "evil" or "oppressive"?

They can "propose" whatever they want, hahaha, doesn't mean it will get anywhere. All it's going to do is waste a whole sh*tload of taxpayers money and piss off a lot of people, have fun NC!!!

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof..."

Congress can't, maybe states can.
The Supreme Court has always applied the 1st Amendment to states as well as Congress, but it's an interesting question.

I'm agin'it of course.

The stupidity of religious nut jobs flares up again. I hope that one day, our society can be free of the evils and oppression of Christianity. So much hatred and evil. At this point, I think I'd rather have a group of Satanic worshipers living next door to me then a hate filled, vile, Christian.
