If you really believe that North Korea only averages 21 executions a year, you are naive. They report that many and the commies at Amnesty International swallow it whole.

I wonder what you have to do to be sentenced to death in China... look at someone the wrong way?

What entertains me is that no one's considering the fact that our country, as well as several others, have habits of beating/murdering/making people disappear without the official "execution" tag. If we look at deaths by government, police and military persons, I bet those numbers would *drastically* shift.

The per-capita figures are absolutely irrelevant to this list, as it's only listing the actual number of executions carried out (or at least, the official figures available; I'm also rather dubious about the accuracy of any figures from North Korea). But if you do want to argue a lower place for the US on this list by using a per-capita figure, in order to be comparitively accurate with the other nations in the list that figure would have to be drawn from the population of the states which maintain active death penalties, not the population of the whole country. All of the citizens of the other countries on the list are potentially subject to a death sentence, but a significant proportion of US citizens are not subject to such penalties unless they move.

You're welcome @SmagBoy and @broizfam! It made me curious, and you know about cats and curiosity, eh?

Too lazy to do your own research?

In 2012, there were 43 executions in the U.S., 15 in Texas, 28 in the rest of the country. Therefore SEVENTH, between North Korea (21) and Yemen (30), is "where the USA would be without Texas..." (at least in this marginally accurate listing).

Thank you, 5Cats! Same as broizfam, I can do the math but didn't see the population numbers.

Pretty close correlation between number of executions and 'would not want to dratting live there.'

Thanks, 5Cats! I was wondering the same thing but was too lazy to look up the numbers.

@SmagBoy: Math is your friend!

China: 1.3 Billion / 1300 = 1 per million
Iran: 77 million / 333 = 4.32
Saudi Arabia: 30 million / 84 = 2.8
USA: 315 million / 44 = 0.14
Pakistan: 180 million / 34 = 0.19
Vietnam: 88 million / 12 = 0.136
North Korea: 24 million / 21 = 0.875

So China slips down several notches just because they have a huge population...

I oppose the death penalty because I simply do not believe the government is competent to be given that kind of power over its citizens.

Crappy music. Also, this is a list. It shouldn't have even been in video format.

Those numbers don't appear to be per capita. I wonder how ranking would go then?
