@Dr

It's not that the guns themselves kill people, it's that they make it really easy for unstable folks to do so.

Do you have a suggestion to prevent this? Is there any evidence to support the notion that a market substitution effect won't occur if high-capacity magazines are limited or if "assault weapons" are banned? I have not seen any such evidence.

Perhaps licensing makes sense, but is there any evidence to support the notion that it will be successful? After all, licenses are required to drive an automobile and still there are millions of preventable accidents each year.

A license is required to purchase and consume alcohol, yet underage drinking rates show no signs of slowing.

In my experiences, the government is not capable of determining an individuals performance adequacy. If that happens to be true, we've only managed to waste a ton of money.

@davymid

Yes, any one of those could kill a person, but where do you draw the line?

Well, there are two parts to that answer. First off, we are provided the right to have some level of firearm access, so banning all firearms is out of the question (not that a total ban is being proposed).

Second, many people are starting to accept the position that citizens should have access to the same level of arms as the policing forces. Limit the police (federal, state and local) to handguns and I'm fine being limited to handguns as well.

The purpose is to avoid creating two "classes" of citizens: those with power and those without. In doing so, we encourage an honest and respectful relationship with the police.

Right now, we have monopolized power in law enforcement; they have weapons that we do not. Correspondingly, the abuse of that power is rampant.

I couldn't see his point behind this gigantic strawman.

5Cats, I wasn't commenting on homicide rates, as they've stayed pretty constant, I' was commenting on gun death. And, regardless, when you're talking HALF the murder rate or lower, that's still extremely significant. But, I know, real stats and actual death is irrelevant so long as we all have the right to spooge on our own guns. Got it.

So, let's boil it down. Here's the (very simplified) series: Nuclear Missile > WMDs > Assault Weapon > Handgun/Hunting Rifle > Hammer > Spoon > Rock.

Yes, any one of those could kill a person, but where do you draw the line? To me, you draw the line on design.

Hunting rifles are made for hunting game and feeding your family, handguns are made for personal protection, hammers are made for hammering nails, spoons are made for eating food, and rocks are just f*cking rocks. When the object being discussed is SPECIFICALLY DESIGNED TO KILL AS MANY PEOPLE AS POSSIBLE IN THE SHORTEST AMOUNT OF TIME POSSIBLE, then maybe you should watch that. Just an idea.

Sorry for shouting. I rest my case.

Oh for f*ck sake.

Yeah, we get it. Guns don't kill people, people kill people, a gun is an inanimate object, etc. We got all that. Let's go through this again, for the mentally slow.

Let's break it down to extremes. Neither do Nuclear Motherf*cking Missiles, they're inanimate objects too, they can't kill anyone unless someone presses the big red button, yet we have pretty strict controls on those. On the other hand, I could kill a guy with a rock, or a spoon, or a hammer, or a car, I guess. No-one's suggesting that it's a good idea to to ban rocks.

Well, a-bombs and anthrax don't kill people on their own, either. Maybe everyone should have those, too. You know, just in case the gov comes for you.

srximus-"scary than a crazy person entering a school with an assault rifle."

That can't possibly happen. For one thing, it's against the law. For another, schools are gun free zones.

Corydoras87-"guns make it very easy, almost enticing"

Yes, it's a good thing YOU don't have access...but your hang-ups have no effect on my rights.

@Langer

He did not say it was loaded, nor did he say it 'out in the open'.

He 'gave it' shells...could have set it on the chair next to it.

He also said he 'placed it on the front porch'. Many people have enclosed porches, which would explain the later line 'it had not rolled outside'.

Though I grew up with guns and absolutely no problem with them, this isn't the issue that people fight over.

It's really down to just the fact that idiots can have guns, irrational people can have guns, people who lose control when they get angry can have guns.

That's the reason people don't want guns. It's the opportunistic aspect of a device that is made to do harm.

"Are their rates even a tenth what they are here in the States. No."
@SmagBoy: You're correct! But NOT the way you intended to be
Wiki Says: Those countries have a homicide rate of 1/2 to 1/5 of the USA, but NOT 1/10th!

ALSO: Consider this:

There's a HUGE demographic skew between whites & non-whites. Also black who live in HIGH gun law places? Die far more often...

Sure guns themselves don't actually kill people, that's just silly. But they sure do make it easier for dangerous individuals to kill people.

@uunxx- no, but shotguns are a dandy tool to make a hole in your garden soil for plantings.
