Unfortunately just flinging stupidity at a massive and diverse continent to try to prove a point is not on. Africa has been home to many rich cultures and civilizations- then been destroyed and looted for the last 300 years. There is evidence- but it has to be hunted for- it got destroyed, and just as you might have trouble with some of Picasso's works if found out of context, much of what we know about has no context. The pity is that people do not realise - and your ignorance is proof of this attitude. I don't get it- it is not your fault- so why systematically denigrate a whole damn continent- it is of no benefit to you but does enormous harm. so Yeah- I call racism- because what else could it be? -

Ollie! You Racist! How dare you point out facts! Their culture is beautiful and rich...even if it is just a stone age culture. So what if they never invented .... well anything. writing, the wheel, farming... that doesn't mean their lowly accomplishments aren't just as significant as the art and science of the renaissance or our modern age.

Did that sound sarcastic?
'Cause I was going for sarcastic.

Old Ollie- troll all you like- but that actually crosses the line between acceptable and non acceptable. by quite a big margin.

So, winning an argument with you "crosses the line?" Tell me, who died and made you the f***ing queen of the f***ing board?

A lot of their history was oral and is not best judged by European standards

So, what you seem to be saying is, their civilization wasn't a civilization at all if you judge it by civilized standards.

Any more questions?

them we took knowledge, skills, in fact it was genocide on a vast scale. So vast that with our colonialism on top it is not at all surprising Africa is in such a state. That is why I think, Africans get so angry- it is not this generations fault- we cannot be responsible for what happened generations ago- but we need to be aware, stop infantilising Africa but recognise what happened to the whole damn continent and think how to help put it back on its feet.

They did have a very rich civilization, art, cities, trade routes. as for slaving- of course, the Europeans only made use of a system already inplace- but by such a huge magnitude, plus they removed those people from the continent permanently, rather than redistributing them.
Not space here to go into the great civilizations- but start
here and follow links. A lot of their history was oral and is not best judged by European standards- hence why artefacts such as the Benin bronzes have had so much debate. People do not realise how rich Africa is/was, how truly enormous ( the Sahara is about the size of the USA) and how badly affected by imperialism it actually is. It was that everything was done differently and when Europeans came and imposed their methods the society already in place pretty much disappeared. We took so many people away- and with

People for get how rich African culture and civilization was...

Yeah, it's pretty easy to forget something that never existed in the first place. "African culture and civilization" is a double-barreled oxymoron.

@madduck: Hummm, I was about to scold you for saying such wild numbers...
But I looked at Wiki a little bit: Wiki Says that if you counted all those who died during raids and transport TO the coast? Those numbers are possible (but still seem high).
See? I -can- think before I post

African nations were slave trading LONG before Europeans started it, just not nearly as many. They provided most of the slaves too, it was actually pretty rare for "whites" to catch "blacks" back then, but it did happen.

France was the #1 slave using nation, by a LONG ways... they usually bought them from the British or Dutch, who'd bought them from Africans, iirc.

5cats- do you have ANY idea how many were taken for the slave trade? A very conservative estimate from the Bristol Port website gives around 20 million- some think it could be as many as a hundred million- I read somewhere that 5 million people a year was reasonable. that had an effect... a BIG effect.

@QueenZira: Aliens built those

But really? Sub-Saharan Africa is completely different from the north. There were some impressive civilizations that rose & fell in Africa's history, but now-a-days their society sux...

People for get how rich African culture and civilization was..... I doubt many people can accurately say how much was down to imperialism- but the amount of people taken by the slave trade must have had a huge impact.the numbers are staggering- then add in the damage we did- and yeah....

I'm tired of the anti-colonial period mentality.
With the exception of dirt, everything they have in the entire southern hemisphere they owe to Europeans.

@soundman655 Um... Singapore? Malaysia is also coming on strong. India could very well become a super power.

It seems that every country who has had European imperialism goes through some degree of destabilization and violence later.

Get serious. No country that lives anywhere around the equator is EVER going to get their s hit together. Got to be cold to get people motivated.
