but when then they make the tests unavailable...they have effectively banned guns.

Which is exactly how politicans work. If you look at my states pistol restriction they're insane most companies don't sell here because of them. It sounded good on paper because they mandated drop test so the gun won't fire which any good company I'm sure does but then added a bunch of other usless requirements. It turned out to be that only S&W a company in Mass pretty much got a monopoly on pistols in this state for a few years while they took their time test other applicants guns. Geeeee bet that lawmaker didn't get his palm greased from someone at S&W.......

It's crazy, pay for a pistol, bring the receipt with the permit application to the sherifs dept. and get fingerprinted, only then can you sign up for the safety course (which is booked a year out in my county and it has to be taken IN my county) then take the certificate from passing the course to the sherifs department where they will put the application through (the one you turned in a year ago if it takes that long to get into the course) and once you receive the permit papers in the mail then you can take it to the gun shop and pick up the gun you purchased.

This is exactly why the NRA fights tooth and nail against all restrictions. Even the reasonable ones. It may seem reasonable to require a safety test, but when then they make the tests unavailable...they have effectively banned guns.

HumanAction & McGovern - thanks for correcting me on that. I knew some states had restrictions on accessories and such, but I was under the impression that they couldn't require a permit just for purchase. That is very retarded, and unconstitutional. I live in Washington, which is mostly liberal, but we don't have any such restrictions.

Whoah! Getting a little defensive here, are we? I just thought most of you would find what I said amazing, because gun stores are very common in the States. I made no value judgement - take it as you will.
Frankly, if I lived in any one of a number of US cities, I'd probably want to get a carry permit.
(And real maple syrup is too GD expensive, BTW. I've had it only a few times.) 8-\

Is anyone else surprised HalfpintRoo hasn't been attacked for wanting to buy a gun?

@HalfPintRoo

That's the end result of people who know nothing about guns making gun laws. I'd check around there's gotta be a course somewhere for you to take. In the meantime you should research what your looking for in a pistol. Try to find a range where you can try what you're thinking about it really helps to try before you buy.

I was under the impression that I could pay for a pistol, but I couldn't take possession of it without a permit.

Isn't that ludicrous!?

Yes, I'm in NY

@turdburglar

In New York (at least when I was living there a few years ago), you are required to have a permit to purchase a handgun; same as in Minnesota.

Actually, Minnesota has a Permit to Carry, which serves both purposes (purchase + carry), and a Permit to Purchase.

Stupid liberal states.

HalfPintRoo - your profile says USA? Certain areas may have restrictions on accessories and features, but thru out the entire USA there is no permit required to own or buy a gun. If you are under 21 you can't buy a pistol, but you can buy a rifle or shotgun. If you want a pistol you need someone to buy it for you or buy one second hand. When you say things are backed up for a year...I assume you are talking about a permit to conceal a pistol. You can still have one, you just can't hide it on your body without the permit. Gun owners absolutely LOVE to share info and knowledge when it comes to firearms. You should have no problem finding friendly advise from a local gun shop or range. Being a female, who is interested in learning, won't hurt either. Know your rights, take responsibility for your (and loved ones) security, and most importantly...be safe! Good Luck!

@carmium I know this might be hard to believe, but if you Canadians can see through the fog of your maple sweet toots,and realize that your sh@t stinks too you might realize not all Americans are the gun hungry maniacs you guys think we are, for the most part we want a safe home just as you do.

It's probably some half blind little old lady who is trying to scare people off. Go ahead, walk in and help yourself to anything you can carry out.

turdburglar, good advice. I will definitely do that. I've been reading a lot on the web and my county is apparently "backed up" almost a year out to get through all the steps... I thought about doing this a year ago and I'm kicking myself for not starting it then. Things are getting worse and worse.

I don't even HAVE a gun store in my city. There're about 150,000 of us here on the North Shore, and not even sporting or department stores sell firearms. Hard to believe, eh, Americans?

HalfPintRoo - I see you got your question answered.
If I may offer some advise...

If you are interested in buying a weapon,it never hurts to know the laws in your neck of the woods. Before you buy, you should find a local gun range. They usually have all the most popular guns there, which you can rent and shoot. That way you know what you really want before you spend your cash.

HalfpintRoo - USA right? No permit required to buy guns. There is a permit to conceal carry a pistol.

Half pint - Check your local sheriff dept web site for permits, laws, ect.
as for safety course. almost all gun shops offer these, and I'm sure the local law enforcement agency could point you in the right direction.

Nice groups, this guy's clearly a good shot! I may have to try this, way better than the people who put those fake alarm company stickers on their doors/windows.

I can't for the life of me find out how to get a gun permit in my county. Or a pistol safety course closer then 80 miles from me.
