i have nothing against "bully breed" dogs - but their owners need to grow some nuts and train them to behave the way they need to in public - not the dog's fault just a stupid lazy dog owner - could have been someone's kid

Yeah that is 1 too many zeros there. Pits can bite pretty damn hard but they don't have the strongest bite of the domesticated canine. From a quick internet search it seems that a Rottweiler's bite is in most cases much stronger. German shepherds are pretty much on the same level as pits when it comes down to pounds PSI. In any case, owners need to be more responsible. That could have easily been a small child hanging limp from his jaws.

"Pitbull jaws may not technically 'lock' but they can and do exert over 3200 pounds of continuous jaw pressure with little effort."

Source? Don't worry, I won't scoff when you state "Oops, added a 0."

Scuzoid: "..no such thing as jaw locking on any breed of dog."

Pitbull jaws may not technically 'lock' but they can and do exert over 3200 pounds of continuous jaw pressure with little effort. That jaw pressure is comparable to an alligator. Also I've seen pitbulls that have chomped down on a few things (a girls hand and a cat) and they would not release. Both dogs had to be put down and even then their jaws didn't immediately release.

P.S. The girl still has trouble using her left hand, the cat died.

Lord. I linked the full story. The DAUGHTER, 18 or something, was walking the dog. On the leash. The dog saw a new, potentially dangerous but definitely strange, species and bolted from the daughter. The father wasn't even at the beach. This dog is far too large to be alone with the daughter in public. ~85lb dog with an ~130lb female is just horrible planning. Finally, no such thing as jaw locking on any breed of dog. The child simply wasn't strong or assertive enough to give the dog a real reason to let go.

To people saying why was it off the lead? Is that not a really normal thing for people to do with their dogs?

Well I have a few words to say...first, why was the dog off the leash?? Second, why didn't the owner have control over the dog, it was obvious to me that once Mark got to the dog things changed in the dogs head, his jaws unlocked and he let go.
Fianlly, I wish I could see the whole situation from the start, I have a feeling this dog was left off his leash to run around, this could have been avoided by a responsible dog owner.
You are right to think this dog would attack a child and not think twice.

they need to have that thing put the helldown because next time it goes for something and wont let go, it could be another dog. a cat or... drat, a child.

Chows probably are more violent but they aren't popular amongst hood rats so there's far fewer incidents. Here's the stats it speaks for itself. I myself don't have a problem with whatever dog you want to own but find it funny this guys on a anti gun crusade which is a machine that a person controls but owns an extremly powerful dog with a mind of it's own that he can't control.

@mcgovern

Here's my problem with your little mis-leading chart by the way:

It doesn't take into account population of breed…

There are around 72 million dogs in the United States…

There are around 5,256,000 Pit Bulls in the united states. In comparison there are around 900,000 Rottweilers, 780,000 German Shepherds and 240,00 Chows…

Between the years 1979-1998 there was 66 fatal Pit Bull attacks, 39 Rottweiler attacks, 17 German Shepherd attacks and 8 chow attacks.

If you can manage to divide population by fatal attacks you'll figure out that chows are statistically more likely to fatal attack you then a Pit Bull is.

LOL!! This anti gun tool can't even control his pet. I really hate pitbulls how about 5 day waiting period and background check on all dog purchases. You may be issued a dog walking permit after a 90 wait for a license and a 8 hour training course....

If you can't control the dog, you can't own the dog. Give him away or put him down. For example, no one buys a .50 clbr as their first weapon for a reason.

CrakrJak "scary looking black ones". i think i know what your talking about. no need to beat around the bush. the "black" ones must be jailed and dealt with properly. the only thing now is to pick out our uniforms and marching music.
on a serious note. go ahead and tell me its not the breed its the owner. the breed is vulnerable to this kind of behavior however, any dog with that level of aggression should get a bullet in the head. i love my two dogs but i would have no problem ending their life if they showed that kind of aggression.

Not the dog's fault. Those dogs are awesome.

The owner has proven himself to be a stupid piece of poo, so we all know where to place blame.

Yesterday, a 14 year old girl was killed by dogs, not 10 miles from my house. The dogs involved were bull mastiffs and Staffordshire bull terriers; such a horrible death.
