The big problem for retailers is that people come into stores (electronics especially) to physically compare phones, notebooks, laptops, etc., make their choice, then go online to a discount company that doesn't pay high retail store rent to buy it. We've lost a few local stores from that practice lately.
A $5 looky-loo charge is still a bad business idea, tho.

Wasabi13: Ref my line 6. Amazon pay internet charges, electricity, servers, desktops, laptops etc. In fact all sorts of incidental charges! They all go onto the price you pay for your item. They just don't have to pay high street bills, rates and rents for retail shops at the mall. They may be cheaper, but you are still paying.

I hope the owner of the closest store that sells the same merchandise has a giant "No Charge To Browse" sign in his window. I guarantee the owner of this store is at least 50 years old. Hey grandpa, start your own website!

I will say one thing though, if you are taking the time to drive to a shop, pick out the product, try it on, put it back, drive back home and order it online to save a couple dollars, you have issues. Just buy the damn thing at the shop and be done with it.

"It's called browsing.
Just like you do on the internet.
You pay for the internet browsing.
Rather than charge for 'just looking', accept it as 'browsing' and add it to the cost of the items on sale.
Just like they do on the internet.
You will still pay for browsing that store, but you won't cuss the shop owner for the privilege."

That's rather a poor analogy. I pay for my car that drives me to the store, and the gas that powers my car. I pay for the computer that logs me onto the internet to go to Amazon, and the internet and electricity required to do so. I do not pay Amazon to look at their wares or browse their items.

lol. So... the people who finally go in to purchase their goods at "almost the same" prices (higher, by default of language use) are then charged more? I'd get as many people as I could to just stand there and wave at them, and never go in and buy a thing.

A pal of mine & I do this every couple of weeks. We have lunch in town and browse for a couple of hours, talking & catching up.
I rarely buy during the browse but invariably I will go back, on my own, for something that I saw & liked.
The shop staff that is welcoming, informative & helpful gets my dollar and I tell all my pals about it.
Won't pay an entrance fee

Google to the rescue. Go in there, pay the $5, browse everything with Google Glass, buy a lousy tea towel or something for $5, make a website offering the catalogue and references to cheaper sources, funded with Google Adsense.

But this is retarded! The people who buy things are not "Just looking". Are we missing this?!

If it wasn't for "just looking" I would most likely not buy anything in stores. How do I know till I look that I want something. It's called impulse buying, and it's one of many problems I have.

Welcome to the new world. $5 just to browse, all because you have a brick-and-mortar shop, which includes rent payments. What's the other option? Go out of business and we all buy online. And what do we do when we're tired of being in the house? We cal always go downtown to the bustling Main Street that has all th... Oh, wait. We're f*cked.

And yeah, the hell with them. If they can't function like a sane establishment, they don't deserve to exist.

Holy hell the idiots on this comment thread...

The store charges a 5 dollar ENTRY FEE. You need to cough up a 5 dollar bill to get into the store. This is offset by a 5 dollar DISCOUNT when you buy something.

I think it's an interesting strategy and I sympathize with the proprietor's interests. However, I'm not sure the motivation of 'just looking' can be established in any clearly definable way, much less enforceable according to any legal statutes I'm aware of.

Not to mention - if you buy something worth less than $5.00, then wouldn't they owe you money? Hence the other catalyst for Kitteh's projection. Looking good these days btw, kitty.

Well since they can only charge it if I buy something, the thing to do is walk around "just looking" then leave. Be sure to flip them off on the way out the door too. What an idiotic thing to do.

If they actually by something then they weren't just looking so you can't deduct $5, if they don't buy anything and were just looking they never make a purchase to deduct from.

So basically this means business as usual.

Idiotic how this may seem, i think this store-owner has a good point.
I don't know how it is in the U.S., but i often visit a store when i am about to purchase an item online. i like to get a feel for the product beforehand.
I realize that what i am doing is taking advantage of someone who pays rent and shop upkeep but doesn't see a penny in return for his investment.
Now if all shopkeepers would close their shops and would go and sell online, where can i go to check out the product?

There's no way they'll ever be able to collect that fee off of anybody.
