I have a simple plan: Find out recipients who have spent food stamps on things they don't need and ban them from the social security system.

There are always some people who game the system, but then that gets translated into rants about how the system is designed purely to rain largesse on the 'other demographic' whereas the ranters 'demographic' is being systematically screwed.
If you hear someone claim that the government wants as many people as possible dependant on government then you entered crazy territory.

Oh, and this interview could be used as source material on a course on 'How not to do journalism'.

Also spending $3 Trillion on futile wars impacts society negatively - while a few handfuls of families get extremely wealthy [the defense contractors].

At least in my state people try to put limits on the EBT card but the Gov. stated that would be demeaning which is how the EBT came to be in the first place. So it's as good as cash infact I think you can get cash from it.....

Also if you want to be adventerous for savings wait out side a foodstamp office. I guarantee you can get food stamps for cash at half their value.

HolyGod-"Then call one of the anonymous tip lines set up to notify the government of cheats and let them go to jail."

Won't happen, as the personel at the EBT office are ASSISTING them..of course, you only recieve this assistance if you fit a certain demographic.

A long time ago a girlfriend needed assistance. She was denied because one of her 'assets' was a car...the biggest POS in the EBT parking lot.

While we were there,I overheard one of the EBT personel ask another person (of another demographic). "Oh Shaniqua, I see you're driving 'your sister's' Navigator..I'll just put down here you don't own a car."

Of course. But please don't tell me you can look at a chart of average CEO pay vs. average worker pay over the past 4 decades and not notice it is accelerating.

I'd also like to point out that, in the same timeframe, 95+% of people who started in the bottom quintile have actually moved up since then. Those who started at the bottom eventually started making twice as much as their parents did, and those who started at the top made about the same all in real terms, on average.

I am more than happy to help the poor and needy anyw ay I can, but do people not see the danger and corruption in this? Yes, it may help some, but as we can clearly see it has become a monster. Forced charity is not charity, oh government, eventually you will runout of other people's money. There are better ways.

This is no longer a capitalist county...its a consumerist country. Too big to fail is too big to exist. They took our money, THEY TOOK OUR JOBS!

I agree with you entirely that there is a growing disparity. My point was that many people seem to think that greed was the only factor that caused the housing market, and subsequent economic, collapse; this cannot be true. Some other event must have occurred that enabled or coerced greed into expanding as rapidly as it has.

With this in mind, I know many people will accuse deregulation. However, I have yet to find a single person who can tell me what was deregulated and why it affected the outcome. Simply suggesting that "they deregulated the banks" carries no weight with me.

"I also know that in this town, if you are one color you get EBT no questions asked, if you are another color you have to jump through hoops to 'prove' that you are needy. "

Yup. I don't know where you live, but that statement is 110% true where I live.

I don't mind helping 47 million people.. I just don't like helping to the point they have a higher standard of living than the working class.

HolyGod-"If you meet the requirements to qualify for food stamps your life is probably pretty rough."

The only problem with that statement is that there are many people that DO NOT meet the requirements to qualify for food stamps, and yet STILL RECEIVE THEM.

I know many people who make good money, and yet receives
EBT. I know one that makes $80,000 per year, and yet still receives EBT (his wife also has a huge purse that is full of empty gallon zip-loc bags when they go into a buffet and full when they come out).

I also know that in this town, if you are one color you get EBT no questions asked, if you are another color you have to jump through hoops to 'prove' that you are needy.

No one's complaining about those in need. They are complaining about those that scam the system.

"I agree, and no I do not envy him."

I guess I am always surprised at people complaining about those (people on welfare, illegal immigrants, etc) that have it far worse off than they do.

If you meet the requirements to qualify for food stamps your life is probably pretty rough. I don't envy those people and if something like this helps them a little bit more than great. We live in a country that has the ability to help 47 million people eat. I just never understand why that is a bad thing.

I'd say the primary one is Big Finance walking away with $4+ TRILLION dollars of middle class wealth in the last few years

You people amaze me. Greed is a constant like gravity; it's not a modern invention. Greed has been and always will be around.

If 2014 sees an unprecedented number of airplane crashes, are we then going to blame gravity - the constant? Of course not.

The current economic crises was fostered by federal reserve credit expansion and poorly conceived mandates (and subsidies) encouraging firms to write risky mortgages.

Would it help at all if I mentioned that Bush was a major factor in the failed economic policies that encouraged the expansion of the bubble? Blaming Bush - that's the cool thing to do, right?

I too am glad that there is a safety net in place if a person ever loses their job for any reasons. Jobs are never a promised thing for in the morning. I have seen a few people humbled in the past couple of years. A certain gentleman and his wife and 3 children. This gentleman made really good money, he too would preach and talk about the..lazy sons-a-b!tches on welfare and such and so did his wife... Until the day he lost his job...(talk about karma comming around to bite) he also preached at how hard he worked and how he payed for these "welfare people"until the day he became one of those "welfare people" and they lost their house to boot. These are scary times. Im thankful everyday that my husband and I still have our jobs because like I said nothing is garaunteed in the morning. All it takes is a split second for your boss to tell you that they can no longer afford to keep you on payroll. I have seen people lose their jobs after working there for 20 plus years.

Sounds like a rather pathetic and listless existence. Do you envy him or something?

HG-
I agree, and no I do not envy him. Although free cash and never having to worry about being laid off or not being able to get by is tempting. In reality my ego wouldn't truly enjoy being so worthless.
I am not republican. I am not conservative. (not liberal/democrat either)

I was not making a statement in favor of the republican ideal which seems to be "every man for themselves".
I was not making a statement in favor of the democratic ideal which seems to be "punish the wealthy for their success, and redistribute their wealth to the poor".

Sanity...And societies moral obligation to take care of each other lies somewhere in between those to ideals. I realize those examples were over-simplified exaggerations. I think everybody can agree that the government assistance program isn't perfect. I don't have the answer.

There's this guy I know who was talking this point up until he lost his job and had to get food stamps. Then he stopped. As usual, folks are quick to judge others circumstances, but when it comes to themselves all of a sudden brutal honesty goes away. I don't envy people on food stamps, cheating the system or not. I'm glad there is a safety net for families that need it, and if that means some people get "free food", so be it. Let's be thankful for not needing it at any level.
