chalket: Yes it was real, there were and still are communists influencing the media, music and movies. Their groups have different names now, but they're commies at heart.

Yes, spies are real but the McCarthyism "Red Scare" was not.

chalket: Problem is FBI & KGB files from that time actually confirm that there was a "Red Menace". And we found out several Red Chinese spies just recently.

It's not paranoia if they really are out to get you.

There were many anxious phone calls made by people getting panicky over the War of the Worlds broadcast, but only annecdotes about people doing more than pick up the phone. The press wildly exagerated and flat out made stuff up; thank god today's media would never do that.

The Mad Gasser was real, not hysteria. They never caught the guy, but he is believed to be Farley Llewellyn a chemistry student studying at the University of Illinois at the time.

What about the whole McCarthy "Red Menace" hysteria? I expected that to be #1 (or at least top 3).

How about the hysteria caused by obnoxiously edited videos set to dubstep?

The only penis disapearing problem I know of is a really cold pool or lake.

Vancouver, early in the 2000s:
Woman claims strange smell on bus; other riders follow, have breathing difficulties, nausea. Cops, paramedics attending stopped bus show same symptoms.Toxin in ventilation system is suspected, hazmat team is sent out in full gear to seal off and test bus. Tens of people are sent to hospital (where yours truly, having been knocked off her motorbike by drunk driver, is parked on gurney in waiting room for hours with fractured hip); place goes into full mass casualty mode.
Results: no illness, poisoning, or lasting effects in any "affected" people. No toxin, poison, gas, whatever found anywhere in/on bus. Lead story one night is quietly ignored by media within two days rather than embarrass everyone involved.

At least one, the War of the Worlds, is a myth.
