Thursday, March 14, 2013 11:41:52 PM I wonder how it would look in real life? The water would appear to be spread out in a fan the same width as the peak-to-peak width of the apparent standing wave. If you want to see the effect with your eyes, you need a strobe light than can flash at the same frequency as the sound from the speaker. |

"I want to pee like this." I always pee like that when I listen to Die Antwoord.

Thursday, March 14, 2013 2:21:01 AM I wonder how it would look in real life? This video is showing the strobe effect based on the frame rate of the camera, and I'm guessing in reality it looked quite different. |

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 10:59:19 PM @jaded That's because you're a dumb ass and don't know what to look up. Try searching for "Acoustic Levitation" |

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 10:50:36 PM "hoax. Google it, not one legitimate source." No, it's not a hoax. It's called the stroboscopic effect, and it's not even that complicated. The water stream is being discharged from the end of the tube which is moving in a sinusoidal pattern at 24 Hz, which produces a wavy stream of water. If the frame rate of the camera matches the oscillation rate of the end of the hose, it will produce a freeze-frame effect because the the camera captures each each image when the hose is in exactly the same position of the cycle. If you were to vary the frequency of the speaker slightly, you could make the water waves move slowly up or down in the same way that a wagon wheel seems to turn backward in a film. |

Wednesday, March 13, 2013 8:40:26 PM Ted, if you fail to appreciate what is amazing about this, then you fail to appreciate basic physics. This is lovely. |
